The longer President Trump 2.0 is in office, the more obvious it becomes that his long-time claims that countries “been ripping off America for years” ring true.
The latest revelation comes as his administration and authorities in India uncovered a major H-1B scandal that has led to thousands of Indian citizens being fraudulently given jobs in the U.S. instead of Americans:
A major fraud investigation overseas is fueling renewed concerns about abuse within the H-1B visa system.
The renewed fears come after authorities in India reportedly uncovered a sprawling network of fake universities that allegedly produced more than 100,000 counterfeit academic credentials.
The revelations have prompted calls from lawmakers and state officials for closer scrutiny of visa applications and stronger enforcement against individuals who may have used fraudulent degrees to obtain work authorization in the United States.
Sen. Eric Schmitt of Missouri reacted to the reports by arguing that anyone who used fake credentials to secure immigration benefits should face prosecution under federal law.
“Authorities busted a massive fake-degree racket: 100k+ counterfeit certificates seized from 28 ‘universities’ in India,” Schmitt wrote on the X platform.
“One mill sold 36k fakes for as little as $1,400 each. It’s time to prosecute those who broke the law,” he added in the lengthy X thread.
According to Indian authorities, investigators uncovered nearly 30 institutions allegedly operating diploma mills and churning out fraudulent educational credentials on an industrial scale.
One of the largest schemes is accused of issuing more than 36,000 fake degrees, with bogus certificates reportedly sold for as little as $1,400 — a price tag that raises serious questions about how many unqualified individuals may have used them to game the system.
The revelations are fueling concerns that some of those fraudulent credentials could have been used to bolster applications for H-1B visas, a program intended to bring legitimately skilled foreign professionals into specialized occupations.
Critics have long warned that weak oversight creates opportunities for abuse, potentially allowing individuals with questionable qualifications to compete for jobs that were never meant to be filled with fake credentials:
1. It Depresses Wages for American Workers
Many conservatives argue that the H-1B program has drifted away from its original purpose of filling genuine shortages of highly specialized talent. Instead, they contend that some companies use the program to hire foreign workers willing to accept lower pay than similarly qualified Americans.
This creates downward pressure on wages in fields such as technology, engineering, and information technology, making it harder for American workers to negotiate higher salaries.
2. Americans Are Sometimes Replaced by H-1B Workers
One of the most controversial complaints involves cases in which U.S. employees were laid off and then replaced by H-1B visa holders or foreign contract workers. Several high-profile incidents over the years have fueled conservative arguments that the program is being used as a labor-cost reduction tool rather than a talent-recruitment program.
Here’s the thing: If a company can replace an American worker with a visa holder, there likely was no true labor shortage to begin with.
3. Fraud and Abuse Are Difficult to Detect
Then there’s the fraudulent credentials, fake work experience, shell companies, and visa mills that submit large numbers of applications, as Sen. Schmitt has reported.
The concern is not merely immigration-related but also one of program integrity: if applicants can obtain visas using fraudulent qualifications, the program fails its stated purpose of bringing in genuinely skilled workers.
4. It Undermines the “America First” Principle
Employers are supposed to make every reasonable effort to recruit, train, and retain American workers before turning to foreign labor. U.S. citizens and legal residents should receive priority in hiring, especially in industries where qualified Americans are available.
This view became particularly prominent during Trump’s first administration, when officials pushed for reforms emphasizing “Hire American, Buy American.”
Trump’s instincts about countries ripping us off have been spot-on the entire time he’s been in office. This H-1B disaster is but one of the ways that’s been happening. The current system should be completely scrapped.
