As frustrating as President Trump can be at times – and let’s all admit that he can be – he’s also the most genuine commander-in-chief we have had in generations, and maybe ever. He demonstrated this latter quality again at the White House on Monday during an interaction with a seasoned citizen who worked for DoorDash and brought the president some of his favorite fare: McDonald’s.

Some background. During Tax Week, cabinet members, including Administrator Kelly Loeffler of the U.S. Small Business Administration, have been actively promoting President Donald Trump’s and Congress’s “Working Families Tax Cut,” which is part of the One Big Beautiful Law (OBBL). Enter the DoorDash grandma who had the unique opportunity to deliver the president’s order directly to the Oval Office, illustrating the real-world impact of these policies more effectively than any political speech.

It was “DoorDash Grandma” Sharon Simmons’ first-ever delivery to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and she made the most of her opportunity:

Sharon Simmons, a Dasher from Arkansas, marked her order complete at the doors of the Oval Office on the South Lawn of the White House—an unconventional drop-off to commemorate the first anniversary of the No Tax on Tips policy.

For Sharon, the moment was personal. A grandmother of ten, she started dashing in 2022 to earn income while keeping control of her schedule. Since then, she’s completed more than 14,000 deliveries, and like millions of Dashers, is now keeping more of what she earns in tips. Since No Tax on Tips was enacted, we estimate Dashers have saved hundreds of millions of dollars.

Simmons was welcomed by President Trump as she arrived to deliver an order at the outer doors of the Oval Office. During their conversation, she explained her motivation for this particular delivery. Simmons shared with the president that, thanks to simplified tax reporting, she had saved over $11,000 by not having to file certain claims. “It was very surprising,” Simmons said.

President Trump responded, “We should call it the ‘Great Big Beautiful Tax Cut Bill!'” He then asked if she’d like to participate in an impromptu press conference, to which she agreed.

Simmons then informed the president about the significant impact of the No Tax on Tips policy on her family.

“I want to thank you for the No Tax on Tips,” she said. “It has helped my family out immensely, and I definitely appreciate it.”

Simmons went on to say that her husband had written a book, and Trump let them get a plug in. So cool, this president!

In a statement to her employer, Simmons said:

It was an incredible honor to represent Dashers from all over the country at the White House today. Thanks to DoorDash, I have been able to provide for my family while keeping the schedule that works best for me, something I never thought would be possible. Now No Tax on Tips has taken things to the next level, letting me keep more of the tips I earn and deserve. Today is a celebration of the advocacy of thousands of Dashers from around the country who fought to ensure we were included in this policy.

A year on, the impact of the OBBL and its Working Families Tax Cut on the lives of everyday citizens is becoming increasingly evident. This successful marketing effort by the Trump administration and DoorDash is likely to yield significant benefits, and we can expect to hear many more stories like that of Sharon Simmons.
