President Trump is one for the history books. The man has had more firsts than any president in the last century, if you stop to add them all up. He’s rewritten the Republican Party’s political playbook and is laser-focused on making our country better. And his mind never seems to stop working, unlike his predecessor.
Add all of that up, and it makes complete sense that he would be the one to come up with another first: A first-ever GOP convention ahead of the midterms, designed to fire up the Republican base and get everyone to the polls:
BIG NEWS! For the first time ever, the Republican Party will hold a MIDTERM CONVENTION. It will be in Dallas, Texas — One of my favorite places in the World. It will be fantastic! It has never been done before, and will be a truly Historic Event.
We are going to celebrate the GREAT AMERICAN COMEBACK, and the incredible successes of the American People who transformed our Country through the America First Agenda — NO TAX ON TIPS, NO TAX ON OVERTIME, NO TAX ON SOCIAL SECURITY, STRONGER BORDERS, SAFEST EVER COMMUNITIES, LOWER COSTS AND REAL AFFORDABILITY, MORE JOBS, AMERICAN ENERGY DOMINANCE, AND SO MUCH MORE! Oil Prices are dropping sharply, even as we Denuclearize Iran.
We are delivering on the promises that politicians talked about for decades, but never got done. At the Event, we will have hardworking Americans, our Great Innovators, Entrepreneurs, Manufacturers, First Responders, and Job Creators who are powering our Nation’s Golden Age, and proving that America’s best days are still ahead of us.
We will also have lots of Great Entertainment — It will be a RALLY like none other! America’s 250th Birthday is approaching, and together, we are building the foundation for the NEXT 250 YEARS of American Greatness. Dallas will take center stage on September 9th and 10th as we celebrate our Nation, our achievements, and our bright future. THE GOLDEN AGE OF AMERICA HAS ONLY JUST BEGUN!
While this is the first GOP midterm convention, Democrats have held three of them in the past – in the 1970s and 1980s.
The Republicans are holding their midterm convention mainly to secure their hold on the House in the 2026 elections. Currently, the GOP has a 218-plus-one (including a nominal independent) majority, compared to 212 Democrats, with four vacancies. If the GOP retains one of the vacant seats, they can only afford to lose a net of two seats. Gaining seats will be more challenging because, in recent history, the president’s party has only picked up seats in midterm elections twice.
President Trump’s average approval rating, according to Real Clear Politics, is 40.7 percent, with 57.4 percent disapproving. This is slightly better than my last measurement, but it remains in a concerning range below 43 percent. Conversely, the Democrats only have a 5.6 percent lead in the generic congressional vote polls, which is not indicative of a “blue wave.” It’s worth noting that Republicans have seen a noticeably stronger trend in generic ballot polling in recent weeks.
The GOP emerged victorious in the 2026 gerrymandering battles. As a result, for the Democrats to have a chance of winning a majority, they need to maintain a 4.9 percent lead in voter preference. According to the Cook Political Report, Republicans currently hold a 212-205 advantage in the House, with 18 races considered toss-ups.
So, all in all, the party is not in the worst shape ever. And to be honest, Trump’s convention idea may just be what we need to push us all past this post-Iran war malaise while the boss refocuses his attention on his core issues of affordability and expanding our economy.
