Omar Starts Begging For Cash As Her Deportation (Hopefully) Looms

Text size

Ilhan Omar resurfaced Tuesday night with an Instagram video shot from the back seat of a car. It was her first substantial public statement since federal agents searched her Washington-area home last week and left with her phone, her notebooks, her computers, and her passport.

The video runs about a minute. The left-wing, ‘Merica-hating Democrat from Minnesota thanks everyone who sent a note of support, and everyone who sent five dollars, ten dollars, twenty dollars. She says it goes a long way as they fight Trump and an administration trying to intimidate her before the midterms. She says the other side is running scared, that she won’t be silenced, that she’ll be back out on the trail helping Democrats win the House and the Senate.

Then she closes by asking again, specifying the same amounts — five, ten, twenty — and noting it’s going to be an expensive and challenging time.

Twice in sixty seconds. That’s not a statement with a donation link attached. That’s a solicitation with a statement wrapped around it.

The defiance is doing a lot of work here, and it doesn’t survive the sequence of events. The government has her passport. Her relatives are receiving grand jury subpoenas. Her husband’s businesses are under separate examination by the U.S. Attorney’s office after disclosures valuing his interests between $6 million and $30 million were amended down to zero. None of that describes an administration that’s nervous.

Her core claim is political persecution — that this is Trump’s revenge campaign. Two inconvenient facts sit in the way. A judge approved the search warrant, which required a finding of probable cause. And the underlying inquiry opened while Joe Biden was president.

The substance remains what it has been all month, and it’s narrow. Omar says she became a citizen through her father’s naturalization in 2000, before she turned 18. In May 2019, after she was already in Congress, her staff asked Minnesota’s Legislative Reference Library to change her listed birth year from 1981 to 1982 — which is precisely the change that keeps her under 18 in 2000. PJ Media reported this week that federal agency letters indicate no naturalization record was located for her father at all.

Jonathan Turley, no partisan brawler, laid out the stakes on television: when someone is accused of unlawfully procuring citizenship, innocence of the surrounding circumstances is not a defense. The law looks at whether the naturalization was properly obtained.

Which explains the fundraising, because none of this is cheap. Immigration counsel, criminal defense counsel, and whatever appellate work follows will run well into six figures. Omar, obviously, wants her supporters to cover all of that.
