Big Blue Wave? More Like Red Storm Rising After What Dems Just Did

Text size

House Majority PAC is the main Democratic super PAC in the business of electing House Democrats. It exists for one purpose, it answers to Hakeem Jeffries’ orbit, and it has access to internal polling that nobody outside the operation gets to see.

This week it pulled its advertising out of two districts it had been contesting: Colorado’s 3rd and Florida’s 7th. The New York Sun reported the cuts, citing the ad tracking firm Adpact. In Florida’s 7th alone, Democrats are walking away from more than half a million dollars in reserved time. Trump carried those districts by 10 and 12 points respectively in 2024.

Pay attention to what that means, because a super PAC yanking money thirteen days out is the single most honest signal available in American politics. Public polls are free to be wrong — two firms have already confessed this month to publishing surveys they fabricated outright. Internal numbers are not free to be wrong. Somebody has to decide where to spend finite dollars in the final fortnight, and that decision gets made on the best information the party has.

House Majority PAC looked at its own data and concluded these seats were gone. Take Colorado’s 3rd, where Democrats thought they had an opening. Jeff Hurd broke with Trump on tariffs, saying he’d heard from farmers, agricultural producers, and manufacturers across his district that the policy was hurting them. Trump initially backed a primary challenger over it.

House Republican leadership rallied to Hurd anyway, Trump re-endorsed before the primary, and Hurd won. Cook has moved the race from lean Republican to likely Republican, and the Democratic money has left the state.

Florida’s 7th was supposed to be even better. The Republican incumbent, Cory Mills, was accused of domestic abuse by his wife and was under investigation over government contracts that House rules prohibit. That’s as wounded as an incumbent gets.

Then Republican primary voters fired him by twelve points and nominated Ryan Elijah, a local radio news anchor. The scandal walked out the door with Mills, the seat snapped back to its natural partisan shape, and Democrats are now eating their reservation costs.

Here’s the broader picture. Of the 46 genuinely competitive House seats, Democrats are defending 25 and Republicans 21 — and 21 of the Democratic-held seats sit in districts Trump carried in 2024. Those are the races that decide the chamber, and every dollar House Majority PAC spends chasing Trump+10 and Trump+12 territory is a dollar not defending them.

Democrats just admitted they don’t have the dollars to do both. So when the next survey lands showing a blue wave cresting, set it beside this: the people whose careers depend on getting it right are redeploying out of red districts and back toward their own.

Follow the money. It isn’t going where the polls say it should.
