Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, the George Soros-backed progressive darling who has spent years making the city of Philadelphia a safer place, well, for criminals, has been hit with federal grand jury subpoenas. The subpoenas follow a judicial referral to the Department of Justice for potential prosecution over criminal misconduct.
The subpoenas relate to possible obstruction of justice, perjury, and conspiracy, all tied to the relitigation of a 2009 murder case. It is unclear whether Krasner and his deputy, Matthew Stiegler, both received them, but things are clearly not going well at the DA’s office these days.
Here is how the whole mess unfolded. Back in November 2022, Krasner’s office filed a petition seeking the release of Dennis Johnson, who had been convicted of second-degree murder for killing Kenyatta Smith during a botched 2007 robbery. The argument was that Johnson received inadequate counsel. Then this past June, Krasner’s office suddenly moved to withdraw that petition because of what it called “material misstatements.” According to sources, Krasner and Stiegler allegedly tried to pin those misstatements on a since-resigned assistant district attorney, Jaclyn Mason. Nothing says “we’re the good guys” quite like throwing a subordinate under the bus.
When line prosecutors inside the office suggested Krasner refer the matter to the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, he reportedly shut that down fast. As one line prosecutor put it in testimony, Krasner said “we can’t send it to OAG because essentially they’re all evil” and “we have to have somebody in the room, in the courtroom to protect the office.” So the fix, in his mind, was keeping everything inside the very office under scrutiny. Completely normal stuff from your friendly neighborhood progressive prosecutor.
The judge overseeing the situation did not exactly give Krasner a glowing review. In a memo, the judge wrote that he “reluctantly concluded that Philadelphia’s highest law enforcement official and one of his top assistants may have violated the law.” That is a sentence that ages like milk, especially for a guy currently serving his third term as the city’s top cop. You can Larry Krasner federal grand jury subpoena and find out just how far this thing has gone.
Krasner, whose representatives did not respond to a request for comment, first won election in 2017 with millions of dollars flowing in from a George Soros-backed political action committee. Soros really does know how to pick them.
The investigation is now in federal hands, with the DOJ looking at the potential obstruction, perjury, and conspiracy allegations. Krasner’s office will presumably continue protecting itself from itself while Philadelphia waits for actual law enforcement.
If a Soros-funded DA facing federal subpoenas for alleged obstruction and perjury does not perfectly summarize where the progressive prosecution experiment has landed, nothing does.
And if the people in Philadelphia don’t get their head out of you know what, then the crime will continue to get worse and your favorite hoagie and cheesesteak places will end up ruined. Do the right thing and vote the vermin out of office. WAKE UP, PHILLY!
