Trump Just Outmaneuvered Newsom on ICE Detention, and California Has No Move Left

Gavin Newsom spent years trying to strangle ICE detention in California. Trump just spent $1.5 billion to make sure it doesn’t work.

The Department of Homeland Security has purchased two of California’s largest ICE detention facilities outright — the 2,560-bed California City Detention Center and the 1,994-bed Otay Mesa Detention Center in San Diego — for a combined $1.472 billion. Over 4,500 detention beds. Permanently under federal ownership. In the heart of sanctuary state territory.

This is checkmate.

California Democrats spent years working every angle available to squeeze ICE out of their state. They passed laws trying to push private detention operators out of business. They sent state investigators to harass facilities. They pressured local governments to refuse cooperation. The Ninth Circuit blocked the most aggressive attempt, but Sacramento kept finding new ways to make federal immigration enforcement slower, harder, and more expensive.

Trump’s DHS didn’t negotiate with any of it. They bought the buildings.

Federal ownership changes everything. The state can’t regulate what it doesn’t own. The local governments can’t pressure landlords who don’t exist. The activists can’t threaten CoreCivic’s contracts when CoreCivic no longer owns the property. Every legal and political lever California Democrats spent years building to obstruct ICE just got pulled out of their hands in a single transaction.

The DHS spokesperson said it plainly: unlike in Florida and Oklahoma, ICE cannot rely on California’s sanctuary politicians for detention space. So instead of begging for cooperation that was never coming, the administration used funding from the One Big Beautiful Bill to buy permanent capacity that Sacramento cannot touch.

The hypocrisy exposed along the way is worth savoring. In Fresno, an assistant U.S. attorney named Rob Fuentes spent months publicly attacking ICE at city council campaign events — while quietly filing legal briefs defending the federal government in at least 124 immigration cases. When his double life became public, he resigned before he could be fired and claimed Trump “pushed him out.” It’s the perfect snapshot of California’s anti-ICE politics: performative outrage on the outside, quiet compliance on the inside, and zero accountability for either.

Senator Alex Padilla immediately vowed to keep demanding “transparency and humane conditions” — which is California Democrat for “we lost and we’re furious about it.” His press releases don’t change who owns the buildings. The deed is already signed.

California currently has eight ICE detention facilities with a combined capacity of nearly 9,000 people. The two Trump just purchased are the largest. And CoreCivic has confirmed it’s in active discussions with ICE about selling more.

Newsom wanted a sanctuary state. He’s getting federal detention centers he can’t close, can’t regulate, and can’t touch.

That’s not just a policy win. That’s a message — delivered in the language Sacramento understands best.

Real estate.
