Something happened to American immigration over the past eighteen months that hasn’t happened in roughly ninety years: the foreign-born population didn’t just grow more slowly. It shrank. According to a Center for Immigration Studies analysis of the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey, the total foreign-born population fell by 2.9 million between January 2025 and July 2026 — the first decline since the 1930s, and a sign that net migration has turned negative for the first time in generations.

The scale is worth holding in view, because it reverses a very recent surge. During the COVID era under the Biden administration, the foreign-born population rose by 8.3 million. What the country is watching now is the sharp counter-swing: a policy that sealed the border and reversed the incentive to come or stay is producing measurable movement in the opposite direction, and quickly.

"The total foreign-born population declined 2.9 million from January 2025 to July 2026… The huge recent decline in the foreign-born population indicates that net migration to the United States was negative in the last year and a half for the first time since the 1930s." pic.twitter.com/Wryd70Mtt6

The composition of the drop matters for keeping the claim honest. CIS estimates the illegal-immigrant population specifically fell by about 2.3 million — from roughly 15.8 million in January 2025 to 13.5 million by July 2026 — and that figure accounts for the full picture: fewer new arrivals, plus those deported, those who left voluntarily, those who were legalized, and those who died. In other words, this isn’t a claim that 2.3 million people were rounded up. It’s a net figure, and the largest single driver appears to be that far fewer people are attempting the crossing in the first place, alongside a meaningful number choosing to leave. Deterrence and self-deportation, not just enforcement, are doing the work. And you just know Democrats are going crazy over these results.

We sealed the border and are getting illegal immigrants the hell out of our country. https://t.co/3Ef8NZEgFK

The first sustained negative migration in 100 years, and picking up speed. The midterms is your chance to either press the accelerator or to let the Democrats smash the brake. You still control your destiny. Never blackpill. https://t.co/Qb6YAfrdoP

One more number deserves attention, because critics will reach for it: only 44 percent of the decline was among workers, with the rest being children, the elderly, and other non-workers. That’s actually the more revealing statistic. It suggests what’s shrinking isn’t primarily the working labor force but the broader dependent population that accompanies mass illegal migration — the household members who arrive alongside workers and draw on schools, hospitals, and public services without offsetting the cost. If the concern is fiscal burden, that composition is the opposite of alarming.

"If the immigration crackdown continues at its current pace, the US will see a reduction of approximately 15.3 million in its foreign-born population by the end of President Trump’s second term."

Turn that dial up to 11, boys. Lets go! https://t.co/cWte9Jql6m

The honest caveats belong here. These are survey-based estimates from a single organization, not a hard census count. But the direction is not really in dispute, and the direction is the story. After four years in which the foreign-born population ballooned by more than eight million, it is now falling for the first time since before World War II. Whatever one thinks of the policy, the claim that nothing can be done about illegal immigration — that the numbers only ever go up — just collided with a data point ninety years in the making.
