Is The Senate About to Finally Pass the SAVE America Act? Well…

One of President Trump’s priorities is getting the SAVE America Act passed into law. He knows that Democrats can’t win several key elections without cheating, and that’s apparent – again – as we see the garbage taking place in California’s ‘elections.’

The chances of it passing actually improved – slightly – this week. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) changed her previous “nay” vote cast last week:

During the Senate’s marathon “vote-a-rama” to advance the GOP’s $70 billion immigration enforcement package, Republicans tried twice to attach the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act to the massive bill.

They failed both times, with a cohort of Republicans joining Senate Democrats to stymie the effort, which was destined to fail either way given that the amendments from Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Mike Lee, R-Utah, had to break through the filibuster.

Oh, right. The filibuster. I’ll tackle that in a moment. But first, Collins appears willing to now support the original version of the SAVE America Act:

Graham’s attempt was to attach the modified version of the SAVE America Act, which included several policy additions, like barring men in women’s sports, that Trump demanded months ago.

Four Republicans, Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Thom Tillis, R-N.C., voted against it. Their defections prevented the bill from even getting 50 votes, a prerequisite for success if Republicans were to launch a talking filibuster.

But Lee’s attempt did hit 50 votes, with Collins flipping her vote to support the original version of the SAVE America Act.

So there’s that. It’s not a huge ‘win,’ but it’s definitely not a loss, and it is a baby step in the right direction. As for the filibuster, I was once solidly on the side of keeping it in place. It seemed to work as designed – to prevent the most extreme elements of both parties from pushing through extreme legislation.

That was then. Now, times have changed. Members of the Domestic Terrorist Party have said on multiple occasions that they will ditch the filibuster to pass the most extreme left-wing agenda we’ve ever seen if they win back power.

So Republicans might as well beat them to the punch and pass an agenda that prevents Democrats from stealing power again. Requiring voter IDs and other election integrity measures in the bill are 80-20 issues; this legislation is a lay-up for Congress to do the right thing for the country.

Let’s do the right thing. Let’s get this done. Let’s get rid of a rule that is arcane and preventing a well-earned Republican majority from enacting our agenda. Time’s a-wastin’.
