Florida Democratic Senate candidate Angie Nixon had a big opportunity to defend socialism when Vice President JD Vance told socialists to leave the country. She took a long look at that opportunity, set it aside, and tried accusing him of using eyeliner instead.
That’s it? That’s all she has? Now imagine she actually won an election and was told to make an important decision, yet she can’t even defend her own socialist views.
Vance was in Lakeland, Florida, on Thursday when he called out Nixon by name. Look no further than Angie Nixon, the self-described, it’s almost too easy to make fun of her, the self-described socialist that the Democrats put up against Ashley Moody this fall,” he said. He noted that many Floridians came legally from Latin America and “know that socialism kills,” then delivered the line that apparently broke Nixon’s brain: “When Angie Nixon calls herself a socialist, I think the right response is to say, then get the hell out of here. You don’t belong in America if those are your views.”
Nixon is, in fact, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, though she has the nerve to deny being a socialist. She told NBC News that incumbent Republican Sen. Ashley Moody was lying when Moody pointed out Nixon’s DSA membership. Ashley Moody knows that I’m not a socialist,” Nixon claimed, despite supporting policies like universal health care and holding a card that says Democratic Socialists of America on it.

Rather than address any of that, Nixon fired back at Vance with a comment that will surely go down in the annals of great political debate. “I don’t wanna COUCH my words here: I know JD Vance, his eyeliner, and absent Ashley Moody are used to running away from people when things get tough,” she said. She was so proud of the eyeliner line that she brought it up again in a follow-up interview, this time noting that Vance’s eyes really “pop.” Political minds across the state are still recovering.
Nixon also called out what she described as a “weird, intrusive agenda” from Republicans, accused Vance of being “the most ordinary man imaginable,” and declared, “I don’t go high when they go low. I get LOUD.” She added that she was “not going any damn place.” That last part may be more accurate than she intended, since you can check out the Florida Senate race polling average and see that Moody leads Nixon by 6.3 points in the Sunshine State.
Nixon’s campaign strategy of dodging the socialism question while critiquing a man’s eye makeup is certainly a bold choice in a state full of people who fled socialist governments. Whether Florida voters find it persuasive is another matter entirely. Drop your thoughts in the comments or share this on social media, because this one’s too good to keep to yourself.
