Democrats Called the Working Families Tax Cuts ‘Abominable’ — Now They’re Claiming They Passed Them

The audacity is breathtaking. The hypocrisy is documented. And the voters deserve to know every word of it.

One year ago, every single Democrat in Congress voted against the Working Families Tax Cuts. Not most Democrats. Not a majority. Every. Single. One. While Republicans were delivering no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, no tax on Social Security, a doubled child tax credit, $1,000 Trump Accounts for every newborn citizen, and the prevention of the largest tax hike in American history — Democrats were on the floor calling it “abominable” and demanding its “wholesale repeal.”

Now that 97% of American tax filers just received a tax cut — with working-class families under $100,000 keeping thousands more of their own money — Democrats have developed a sudden case of selective amnesia. And they’re running ads claiming credit for legislation they tried to kill.

The examples are not subtle. Michigan Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet ran taxpayer-funded television ads claiming she “passed the Working Families Tax Credit.” She voted against it. Arizona Sen. Ruben Gallego introduced a bill to make Trump Accounts permanent — rebranding them “American Dream Accounts” to hide the Republican origin — while conveniently omitting that he voted against creating them in the first place. Nevada’s entire Democratic congressional delegation wrote a letter demanding successful implementation of the No Tax on Tips provision for their constituents. They all voted no on the provision they now want credit for implementing.

In Missouri and Kansas, Democratic representatives issued a joint press release celebrating World Cup security funding they voted against — from a Department of Homeland Security they voted repeatedly to shut down.

This isn’t nuanced political repositioning. This is fraud. These members looked their constituents in the eye, voted to deny them tax relief, and are now running ads claiming they delivered it. Speaker Johnson said it plainly: Democrats in unison voted against the average American family receiving between $2,300 and $3,750 in tax relief, voted against $1,000 investment accounts for every newborn citizen, voted against no tax on tips and overtime — and now they want credit for all of it:

With their unanimous opposition to the Working Families Tax Cuts, Congressional Democrats in unison voted against the average American family receiving between $2,300 and $3,750 in tax relief — with 97% of all tax filers receiving a tax cut — and $1000 investment accounts for every newborn citizen in America. They also voted against no tax on tips and overtime, the doubled child tax credit, and $50 billion for rural healthcare. Now, as tens of millions of citizens are benefiting from this historic tax relief, Democrats are attempting to mislead the American people and claim credit for something they opposed vehemently. Republicans will not let the American people forget that if Democrats had it their way, every taxpayer would have faced the largest tax increase in American history.

The math on what Democrats actually voted for is equally clear. Without the Working Families Tax Cuts, American families would have faced a $5 trillion tax increase — the largest in American history. That was the Democratic position. That was their vote. The fact that it didn’t happen is entirely because Republicans held the line without a single Democratic vote.

Eighty-two billion dollars has been returned to American taxpayers. Ninety-six percent of the families who benefited earn under $200,000. Twenty-five million workers paid no tax on their overtime. Every one of those outcomes happened in spite of Democratic opposition — not because of it.

Remember their votes. Share this story. And when a Democrat in your district runs an ad claiming credit for tax cuts they called abominable — make sure every voter in that district knows the truth.
