Vice President Kamala Harris is facing backlash for recent comments about former President Jimmy Carter that some online critics describe as bordering on sociopathic. The Democrat spent Saturday energizing party supporters in Georgia, where Carter served as governor there from 1971 to 1975 before becoming president the following year. In between calling former President Donald Trump “cruel” and a threat to reproductive freedoms, she referenced Carter’s upcoming 100th birthday and noted that he mailed in his ballot for her this month.
“If Jimmy Carter can vote early, you can too!” she exclaimed with a maniacal laugh. Some users on X contrasted Harris’s remarks about Carter with video footage of the elderly former president appearing disoriented and out of it. “This is psycho level s***,” conservative commentator Dave Rubin wrote. One follower replied, “It’s disgusting, disrespectful and shows how uncaring she is. She gives off sociopath vibes.” Others blamed Carter’s kin for carting him around on his deathbed. “Shame on the Carter family for allowing this man to be displayed like this. Disgusting,” another wrote.

“Elderly people, at that stage of their life, shouldn’t be rolled out for political stunts like that. It doesn’t matter what side it is, Democrats shouldn’t do it and neither should Republicans. The old fella needs some dignity now,” said another X user.

Carter allegedly voted on October 16th, two weeks after he turned 100. According to NPR, more than 1.2 million ballots have already been cast early in Georgia, and Democrats are hoping that the image of a frail Carter will encourage turnout among key voting blocs, particularly in the Atlanta area. During her visit, Vice President Harris capitalized on her star power, sharing the stage with singer Usher in Atlanta and later teaming up with Lizzo in Detroit, Michigan. “All the best things were made in Detroit: Coney Dogs, Faygo, and Lizzo,” the singer joked to the rally crowd.
Despite emphasizing the elderly former president’s ability to vote even on days when he struggles to wake up, according to his family, Harris criticized President Trump for his age. “Somebody just needs to watch his rallies if you’re not really sure how to vote,” she remarked in Detroit over the weekend. But Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley shot back that Harris was relying on celebrities like Lizzo “to hide the fact that Michiganders were feeling good under President Trump – real wages were higher, prices were lower, and everyone was better off.”
