On Tuesday, the Trump campaign filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission, accusing President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris of violating campaign finance laws. They alleged that Biden’s campaign funds were unlawfully transferred to the Harris campaign.
“Kamala Harris is seeking to perpetrate a $91.5 million dollar heist of Joe Biden’s leftover campaign cash — a brazen money grab that would constitute the single largest excessive contribution and biggest violation in the history of the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971, as amended,” David Warrington, the Trump campaign’s general counsel wrote in the complaint, according to a report from the New York Times.
The complaint also accuses Biden and Harris of “flagrantly violating the Act by making and receiving an excessive contribution of nearly one hundred million dollars, and for filing fraudulent forms with the Commission purporting to repurpose one candidate’s principal campaign committee for the use of another candidate.”
“To date, Biden for President has provided no indication that it will return or redesignate all of its general election contributions. Thus, each and every general election contribution received by Biden for President is an excessive contribution,” the complaint continued. The Trump Campaign contends that Biden should not be able to retain campaign contributions meant for his re-election if he is no longer a candidate for the general election.
Trump’s legal team wants the FEC to provide a prompt and speedy response, arguing that Harris is “in the process of committing the largest campaign finance violation in American history and she is using the Commission’s own forms to do it.”
While the Democratic Party has not yet officially nominated Harris for president, she has garnered endorsements from numerous prominent Democrats, including Biden, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and House of Representatives leaders. Additionally, several state delegates have committed to backing Harris at the upcoming convention in Chicago.
CNN’s Harry Enten said during a network segment on Tuesday that Democrats are likely very premature in celebrating Harris’s ascendancy to the front-runner spot.
The senior data analyst broke down Harris’s “difficult” journey to victory over former President Donald Trump, highlighting that her polling figures are barely higher than President Joe Biden, who was sidelined mainly by leading Democrats in the party who were concerned that Biden’s lack of popularity would undermine prospects for winning the U.S. House and Senate.
“This has been the craziest month in American politics that I can recall,” Enten said, referencing the attempted assassination of Trump and how last month’s debate seems to have happened a lifetime ago. “But here’s the thing — for all of the excitement that Democrats have over Kamala Harris, it is going to be difficult to beat Donald Trump.”
“For all of the excitement that Democrats have over Kamala Harris, it is going to be difficult to beat Donald Trump and I want to give you an understanding of why. Let’s take a look here just first at the favorable views of Donald Trump. We know that Donald Trump has historically been unpopular, but take a look now. After the Republican National Convention, in the ABC News/Ipsos poll, he recorded his highest-ever favorable rating at 40%. That’s not a one-off,” Enten told host Sara Sidner.
“Take a look at the Quinnipiac University poll, 46%. That’s the highest ever in that pollster. The fact is Donald Trump is more popular now than he ever has been before,” Enten continued. “So, yes, Democrats can make this switcharoo, but they’re still going to have to beat Donald Trump. A Donald Trump, who is stronger, Sara, than he has ever been before.”
