He’s been mayor of New York City for less than a year. He hasn’t built a government grocery store that works, can’t deliver free buses, couldn’t arrest Benjamin Netanyahu, got booed off a Staten Island stage by 3,500 people, doxxed nearly a million property owners, and watched his rent freeze drive market rents to all-time highs. What he has managed to do is use the New York City mayor’s office as a DSA campaign operation.
Now it’s official — at least officially complained about.
The Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust filed an ethics complaint asking the city’s Conflicts of Interest Board to investigate Mamdani for using his official position, city resources, and — critically — the NYC mayoral seal to endorse Governor Kathy Hochul’s reelection campaign and Lindsey Boylan’s City Council bid, along with eight other Democratic candidates. The city’s own Conflicts of Interest Board published an advisory opinion in 2009 specifically warning city officials against using public resources for endorsements.
FACT’s executive director Kendra Arnold delivered the correct framing: “Separating official activities from political ones is the foundation of sound ethics laws and imperative to maintain the public’s trust in government.” City Hall is not a campaign office. The NYC seal is not a campaign logo. The mayor’s press conference podium is not a DSA endorsement platform.
None of this stopped Mamdani from using all of them anyway.

Christian Heiens identified what the ethics complaint documents behaviorally: “Mamdani understands how this all works. Politics isn’t about the free market of ideas or balancing budgets. It’s about taking power, defunding your enemies, putting your people in charge of everything, and then using that authority to enshrine your values as the new norm.”

That’s the playbook. Use city resources to reward allies — DSA candidates, progressive incumbents, Hochul who provides the state backing he needs. Use city authority to punish enemies — landlords facing the pied-à-terre tax, property owners doxxed in a searchable database, police unions who opposed him from day one. Build dependence on government services — grocery stores, bus fare, childcare subsidies — while making sure the institutions that provide those services are staffed by politically reliable people.

The ethics complaint is worth filing. The COIB investigation is worth pursuing. But let’s be honest about what the broader picture shows: this is what happens when voters elect a man whose stated political philosophy involves abolishing private property and transforming every institution of government into an instrument of socialist governance. He’s not hiding what he’s doing. He said what he intended to do. New York City elected him anyway.
The ethics complaint is one tool. The ballot box in 2029 is the other.
In the meantime: City Hall is not a campaign office. Someone needs to enforce that standard before the DSA completes its transformation of New York City government into a fully integrated political machine.
