Former President Barack Obama says his growing role as a critic of the Trump administration has created genuine strain in his marriage to Michelle Obama. Obama made the admission in an interview published in The New Yorker on May 4.
Obama said Michelle wants more of his time and attention. “She wants to see her husband easing up and spending more time with her, enjoying what remains of our lives,” he said, acknowledging the frustration the situation has caused her.
From the Sidelines to the Spotlight
During Trump’s first term, Obama largely stayed out of public debate, following the informal tradition of former presidents avoiding direct criticism of their successors. That changed as Trump’s first term progressed, and Obama has now stepped further into the spotlight during Trump’s second term, becoming one of the administration’s most prominent Democratic critics.
Obama said his current standing is not about historical comparisons to other presidents. “People aren’t looking at me in historical comparison to other presidents,” he said. He added that few former presidents have remained active political surrogates across four consecutive election cycles after leaving office.
Trump’s Policies Driving Obama’s Return
Obama credits what he describes as Trump’s “recklessness” for pulling him back into the political arena. He pointed specifically to the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris climate accords and legislative moves affecting the Affordable Care Act as key issues that prompted his re-engagement. According to Barack Obama’s New Yorker interview, his return has been broader and more intensive than he originally planned.
His social media presence has become a significant tool. Five posts Obama made on X about a Virginia ballot measure to redraw congressional districts drew more than 220 million views. In a March 5 post, he wrote, “Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy. But right now, they’re under attack,” expressing alarm about Republican-controlled states altering congressional maps ahead of the midterms.
What Comes Next for the Obamas
Michelle Obama has also increased her own public profile, using podcasts and media appearances to weigh in on issues connected to the Trump administration. The two appear committed to staying engaged politically, even as that involvement creates personal tension at home.
Barack Obama has previously acknowledged the difficulty. In 2025, he said he needed to “dig myself out of the hole I found myself in with Michelle,” referencing high-profile moments when she chose not to appear alongside him at certain public events. How the couple balances their political commitments with their personal lives remains an open question as Obama’s activism shows no signs of slowing down.
