President Trump declared Friday that CNN, MS NOW and Politico are banned from White House coverage effective immediately, setting off a wave of condemnation from First Amendment advocates, elected Democrats and figures across politics and media. Trump offered no single story or segment as the trigger for the ban, writing that “it’s really just cumulative stories over the last two years. You get sick of it.” He also hinted that additional outlets could face the same fate. As of Friday evening, no reporters from any of the named outlets had been physically removed from the White House grounds, and the White House Correspondents Association had not issued a public response.
CNN Warns the Ban Would Be Illegal
CNN issued the most forceful response, framing any enforcement of the ban as a constitutional violation. “CNN stands fully behind our White House team and their fair and accurate reporting,” a spokesperson said. “We have a right under the U.S. Constitution to do that reporting without hindrance or interference from the government.”
The Warner Bros. Discovery-owned network also signaled it was prepared to go to court. Politico, which became a target of right-wing criticism during Elon Musk’s government-spending reduction efforts, was also named in the ban. Trump’s post accused the outlet of reporting fake news while receiving what he described as government subsidies, a reference to federal agencies subscribing to Politico Pro for policy reporting. The network is home to “Morning Joe,” a program Trump has repeatedly attacked, as well as former Biden press secretary Jen Psaki.
