Donald Trump wasn’t a politician, but he won the first and, at the time, only public office he ever ran for in 2016. The rest is history.
Trump returned for Version 2.0 in 2024, handily besting Word Salad Kamala and sending the entire Democrat Party into fits. Trump returned for his second term much more politically savvy than he was during his first term, and it shows. From the loyalists he picked for his Cabinet to negotiating with Congress, the president has become a formidable force in the shark-infested D.C. waters.
That was on display again Tuesday when Trump dropped an ultimatum to the hapless Republicans in Congress: Get your shizzit together on the SAVE America Act or forget about your other pet legislative projects, like reauthorizing Section 702 of FISA:
President Donald Trump on Wednesday railed against Republicans and “Dumocrats” for a failed plan to replace Bill Pulte as acting Director of National Intelligence with Jay Clayton.
“The Republicans agreed with Dumocrats to remove very fair, and talented, William Pulte, from serving as Acting DNI in return for getting FISA approved by the Dumocrats,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
“However, the Republicans moved so fast with the hearings of the Great Jay Clayton, current U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, that Pulte would be gone before the Dumocrats would vote on FISA. Now, the Dumocrats are saying they will vote against FISA — So, the Republicans wound up having fulfilled their commitment, but Dumocrats broke the Deal,” he added.
He further argued that U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald “must be confirmed and blue slipped” and ripped Republicans for still continuing to observe the blue slip tradition in which senators from a state where a nominee hails can prevent them from going through the confirmation process.
The process, like every other “tradition” in the Senate, has been politically weaponized by Democrats. But we still have too many spineless Republicans who refuse to get rid of it and the outdated filibuster rule.
“Because of the ridiculous views of Republicans on blue slipping (Dumocrats are often willing to nix it), I may not be able to get the extraordinary Sullivan & Cromwell Partner, Jamie, approved, and I don’t want to take Jay Clayton away from the great job he is doing until Jamie is in place,” Trump continued.
“Therefore, to add a slight bit of intrigue but, for the Good of the Nation, and the People of our Country, I will not approve FISA without THE SAVE AMERICA ACT going along with it.”
Boom. Well played, Mr. President.
He also criticized Republicans for falling “into a trap” while adding that they are “cancelling the Senate Hearing RE: DNI today” for Clayton until McDonald is confirmed.
It’s time for Trump to use whatever levers of power he can to get these loser Republicans off their duffs and into the game. Democrats, God forbid should they win power again, will most definitely unify to destroy what is left of our system to install as much left-wing socialism as possible. Things have become that serious.
I’m just befuddled by the fact that too many on our side refuse to recognize and acknowledge this. We need a Congress full of Trumps, not McConnells and Tillis’.
