Police body camera footage has surfaced showing North Carolina Democratic congressional candidate LaKesha Womack being served a felony warrant at one of her own campaign events. She’s running to unseat Republican Rep. Tim Moore, and apparently the road to Congress has a few unexpected pit stops.
The footage was obtained and published by Charlotte news station WSOC-TV. According to court records, the felony charge stems from Womack’s failure to return a rental car in October 2019. A 2019 Toyota Corolla sedan, to be specific, valued at $20,000.
The criminal summons doesn’t mince words. LaKesha Womack felony rental car charge It states she “unlawfully, willfully and feloniously did FAIL TO RETURN A 2019 TOYOTA COROLLA SEDAN.” A criminal summons was first issued in January 2020 and was reissued earlier this month, which is when police caught up with her at the campaign trail of all places.
When reporters asked Womack about the warrant, she offered this gem of a response: “I can’t talk about that because it is an ongoing legal case. But I will say that if it were something much more serious, then I probably would have been served and charged much quicker than a week before early voting started.” So her defense is basically, hey, at least I didn’t steal something bigger. Bold strategy.
Earlier this month, according to the Substack account “Cops and Congress by Annie Dance,” Womack attributed the whole situation to being homeless at the time. “And I did not know that they had filed a case against me for this because again, I was homeless. So I had nowhere to receive mail,” she reportedly said. She later added, “Obviously, like I thought I had resolved the issue, but it’s not resolved.”
She did not explain what steps she actually took to resolve the matter. So we’re left to imagine what “resolving” a missing rental car looks like without, you know, returning the car.
Womack has a court date set for November 10. Election Day is Tuesday. So North Carolina voters get to decide whether they want to send someone to Congress who has an active felony case and a missing Toyota on her record. Democrats really do find the most fascinating candidates.
Rep. Tim Moore can probably sleep pretty well tonight. His opponent just got served a warrant at her own campaign rally, on camera, for all of Charlotte to see. If this is the Democrats’ best shot at flipping that seat, Moore’s got nothing to worry about.
