Georgia state Rep. Ruwa Romman, the Democratic nominee for state Senate District 7, is facing an active ethics investigation after two videos surfaced showing her telling supporters to postdate checks and fill out pledge forms to get around Georgia’s ban on campaign fundraising during a legislative session. Telling people how to break the law should make her an accomplice, right?

The State Ethics Commission confirmed in an October 14 email that a complaint filed by Keath Blatt is “active and under investigation,” received on August 28 and opened on September 1. The complaint alleges that Romman, during a virtual meeting before the legislative session ended, solicited campaign contributions and asked attendees to “write checks dated for after April 3rd to Ruwa for State Senate.” Romman did not respond to requests for comment.

In a recording of a virtual campaign meeting that reportedly took place on March 26, Romman campaign finance investigation Romman told supporters, “There is a pledge form on our website in the meantime where if you want the ActBlue link, you can fill out a pledge, and then we can collect those after session, when session is over, inshallah.” A second video obtained by Focus on Western Islamism shows her in another Zoom meeting saying, “In terms of fundraising, we’re going back to the whole like collecting pledges thing. People can also write checks, but dated for April 3rd.” That’s not a loophole. That’s just the same thing with extra steps.

Georgia Code § 21-5-35 is pretty clear. No member of the General Assembly or their campaign committee shall “seek or accept a contribution or a pledge of a contribution” during a legislative session. The 2026 session ran from January 12 through April 3. The complaint puts it plainly: “By advising donors to post-date checks, Respondent attempted to evade the prohibition by giving the appearance that contributions were solicited after the legislative session.” An archived copy of Romman’s campaign website from February 27, right in the middle of the session, greeted visitors with “Pledge today!” and suggested dollar amounts before letting them proceed to the site.

Romman is a sitting member of the Georgia House representing District 97 and previously served as communications director for the Georgia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. CAIR National was named an unindicted co-conspirator in the 2007 Holy Land Foundation trial and identified as a member of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Palestine Committee, which federal prosecutors said oversaw Hamas fundraising in the United States. In December 2023, the Biden White House disavowed CAIR after its executive director said he “was happy to see” Palestinians break out of Gaza on October 7, a comment a Biden spokesman called “shocking, antisemitic.” CAIR said the comment was taken out of context. Great company to keep.

The Ethics Commission has not ruled on the complaint, but they better hurry up and get this nonsense out of our government. Romman is on the ballot for the November 3 election, and Georgia voters will get their say. If the investigation wraps up before she does, that’ll be one heck of an October surprise turned November reminder of what Democrats mean by “following the rules.”
