Federal prosecutors in Boston just busted what they say was a decade-long wedding scam, and it was not your average love story. Six people face charges for allegedly running a marriage fraud ring that arranged hundreds of fake weddings so foreign nationals could score immigration benefits, raking in more than $6 million along the way.

Massachusetts U.S. Attorney Leah Foley announced the charges at the Moakley Federal Courthouse in Boston, flanked by Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services officials. Five of the six suspects were arrested Wednesday morning. The sixth, Jaylin Hill, 26, was already sitting in state prison on a firearms offense, because apparently one alleged crime spree was not enough.

The alleged ringleader is Jennifer Gonzalez, a U.S. citizen who prosecutors say turned fake matrimony into a very real business. Boston marriage fraud charges According to Foley, Gonzalez charged between $38,000 and $40,000 per marriage and ran 18 to 20 of these sham weddings every single year for over ten years. Do the math. That is a lot of bouquets tossed for absolutely zero romance.

A cooperating witness even caught Gonzalez on recording bragging about investing her profits in businesses and property in the Dominican Republic. Nothing says “I love you” quite like laundering your fake-wedding money into foreign real estate.

The other defendants, Erica Daniels, 29, Chreise Alejandro, 39, Jessica Tavares, 31, and Hill, all U.S. citizens, were each allegedly paid to actually marry immigrants. They would stay hitched just long enough to help the foreign national start the legal process, then get divorced, and Gonzalez would line up the next gig. Amara Pugh, 31, also a citizen, allegedly served as the secretary holding the whole operation together. Think of it as a staffed HR department, but for fake weddings.

And if all that was not enough, Foley said multiple defendants also allegedly lied on Massachusetts SNAP benefit applications, falsely claiming they had never been married. So they were collecting government food assistance while pocketing tens of thousands from sham nuptials. Your tax dollars hard at work, folks.

“And this was all done to circumvent our immigration laws,” Foley said. A point that is worth letting sink in. This was not a victimless paperwork shuffle. It was a years-long operation designed to make a mockery of the legal immigration system that millions of people navigate honestly every single year.

The five arrested Wednesday are expected to make their first federal court appearances the same afternoon. Gonzalez and the rest now face the full weight of federal prosecution, and something tells us the prenup on that outcome is not looking great for them. Who says romance is dead?
