Rep. Ilhan Omar’s pathetic political persecution sob story that the raid on her Washington, D.C., home was nothing but Donald Trump’s political vengeance just took a serious hit, and it came from CNN of all places.
CNN confirmed that Justice Department prosecutors had to go through federal magistrate Judge Matthew Sharbaugh of the DC District Court before they could execute the search warrant on Omar’s home. Not only did Sharbaugh approve the warrant, he actually limited how the DOJ could access her documents because of her role as a member of Congress and the constitutional protections that come with it. So the judge bent over backward to protect her rights, and she still wants to play the victim card.
In other words, a deep blue Democrat judge approved the warrant, so there must be something serious that’s worth investigating.
Here is where Omar’s persecution narrative really falls apart. the Ilhan Omar home raid investigation revealed that Sharbaugh is no Trump loyalist. According to a Fox News op-ed by Article III Project founder and former Senate Judiciary Committee counsel Mike Davis, Sharbaugh donated to Hillary Clinton during her losing 2016 presidential campaign against Trump. He also clerked twice for Judge Robert Wilkins, described by Davis as a leftist appointee of President Obama, on both the DC US District Court and the DC US Circuit Court.
Davis noted that Judge Wilkins was one of three DC circuit judges pushed through by then-Democrat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid at the end of 2013, right before Republicans took back the Senate. That’s a pretty deep blue résumé for the guy Omar is supposedly painting as a Trump stooge.
Sharbaugh also has a track record of ruling against the Trump administration. Back in August, he released a woman accused of deliberately defacing the World War II Memorial, letting her walk on nothing more than a personal recognizance bond, despite the DOJ asking for something stricter. This is the big scary Trump puppet who approved the warrant. Sure, Ilhan.
Davis had already suspected Sharbaugh was the judge involved, pointing to the DC US District Court’s public website showing Sharbaugh was the magistrate on criminal duty from October 3 through October 16, 2026, covering the period of the raid. CNN’s reporting made it official.
The pre-dawn raid happened early Monday morning, with multiple agents in HSI jackets observed outside the residence around 6 a.m. Federal investigators are looking into a criminal fraud investigation tied to Omar’s immigration paperwork, specifically documents filled out by her late father when she immigrated as a child. According to her own website, Omar arrived in the United States in March 1995 at age 12, spent about four years in a Kenyan refugee camp beforehand, and became a naturalized citizen in 2000 at age 17.
Omar is still pleading her innocence and insisting this is all Trump’s doing. But it’s getting hard to make that argument when the judge who signed off on the warrant donated to Hillary Clinton and clerked for Obama’s picks. The investigation moves forward, and Omar’s persecution story has fewer legs than ever.
