The spray paint read “Clean Hands Dirty $.” The target was the World War II Memorial — one of the most sacred sites on the National Mall, honoring over 16 million Americans who served and the more than 407,000 who died. The suspect is Melissa L. Farris. And on Friday morning, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro filed two felony charges against her: Depredation Against Property of the United States and Destruction of Veterans’ Memorials. She is in custody. Each charge carries up to ten years in prison.
Pirro made this personal and she had every right to. “Vandalizing our World War II Memorial is a despicable attack on a sacred monument honoring the Americans who fought and died for our freedom. Those Americans include my father and grandfather.”
Trump’s reaction on Truth Social was equally direct: “OUR BEAUTIFUL WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL WAS JUST HIT BY SPRAY PAINTING VANDALS. THERE CAN BE NO GREATER INSULT TO THOSE AMERICAN HEROES WHO DIED IN WORLD WAR II. First the Reflecting Pool, now this. We are on their trail! Where do these animals come from???”

The timing and context matter. This is now part of a documented, sustained campaign of vandalism against the nation’s most iconic monuments — the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool targeted multiple times, the WWII Memorial now hit with spray paint, the “86 47” burn marks in the grass near the reflecting pool. These are not isolated incidents of youthful stupidity. They are a coordinated ideological assault on the physical symbols of American greatness, carried out by people who have been told — by politicians, by activists, by college professors — that America’s monuments represent a history that deserves desecration rather than honor.
The politics of this moment are worth noting explicitly. Pirro recently dropped the reflecting pool charges against Olympic canoeist David Hearn — a decision Trump publicly called out as a mistake, saying she “folded like an umbrella.” She met with Trump at the White House after that criticism. Whether Friday’s felony charges against Farris represent a recalibrated posture from Pirro’s office is a reasonable inference. Either way, the outcome is the right one.
The 407,000 Americans who died in World War II were not wealthy elites. They were working-class men from farms and factories and small towns who crossed oceans to stop fascism. Many of them came home in flag-draped coffins. The ones who didn’t come home at all are honored at that memorial. Spray painting it with anti-capitalist slogans while their families still live is not protest. It is desecration.
Felony charges. Up to ten years. In custody. The vandals are being found. The charges are serious. The message is clear. That’s what accountability looks like. More of it, please.
