All one can do in this situation is chuckle: a state attempting to dictate how a federal law enforcement agency should function. That’s not how this operates. The Democratic governor of New Jersey, Mikie Sherill, enacted legislation stating that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents cannot wear masks or something similar, among other provisions. Ma’am, you’re not allowed to impose that. Toilet paper used for personal hygiene is more valuable than what you just enacted.
Donald Trump’s untrained, unaccountable, masked ICE agents are putting people in danger.
That’s why I just signed a package of legislation to keep our communities safe – strengthening trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve, banning ICE agents from wearing… pic.twitter.com/tTqYUKteeb

Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia destroyed Sherrill’s performative politics with a blowtorch. She reminded Trenton and the governor about the Supremacy Clause, noting that states – yes, even those run by Democrats – cannot dictate how federal immigration agents (or any other federal agents) operate:
It’s a sorry state of affairs when a former English teacher has to explain the Supremacy Clause to a room full of legislators who went to law school.

Congratulations on your impressive performance in political theater, Mikie, but ICE is not required to comply, and they won’t. The funding for ICE extends until 2029. Deportations will persist, particularly in New Jersey. Even though this agency is assisting TSA at our airports, TSA is still capable of fulfilling its responsibilities.
