Take a moment to watch this remarkable video from 2015, featuring Marco Rubio, the then-Republican senator from Florida and now Secretary of State. On the Senate floor, he vehemently criticized former President Obama’s ill-conceived Iran nuclear deal. This “deal” essentially amounted to us handing the Iranian mullahs billions in cash with almost nothing in return.
In light of the ongoing conflict in Iran, especially with recent U.S.-Israeli airstrikes resulting in the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei along with many of the regime’s key figures, Rubio’s words now seem strikingly prophetic. It’s almost as if he had a glimpse into the future—or perhaps he was just thinking clearly, unlike Obama, then-Secretary of State John Kerry, and the Democrats, who appeared unwilling to apply the same level of critical thought at the time:

It’s as if he had an inkling that people would still be discussing his words years down the line. He was truly on fire, and if he made any missteps, I certainly can’t identify them.
“I do want to be recorded for history’s purposes, before I know what’s going to happen in regards to this [deal], if it goes through,” he said, adding:
Iran will immediately use the money that it’s receiving and sanctions relief to begin to build up its conventional capabilities. It will establish the most dominant military power in the region outside of the United States, and it will raise the price of us operating in the region.
They’re going to build anti-access capabilities, rockets capable of destroying our aircraft carriers and ships. Continue to build these swift boats that are able to come on us, these fast boats that are able to swarm our naval assets. And they’ll make it harder and harder for U.S. troops to be in the region.
He understood something that Obama appeared not to realize (purposefully or not – you be the judge): that giving the mullahs bags of cash would not deter them from continuing to be the world’s leading sponsors of terrorism…
They’ll also work with other terrorist groups in the region to target American servicemen and women. And they may or may not deny that they’re involved, but they will target us and raise the price of our presence in the Middle East until they hope to completely pull us out of that region.
They’ll also continue to build long-range missiles. Missiles capable of reaching the United States.

Rubio highlighted a truth that many of us acknowledge, though Democrats seemed incapable of doing: if we allow the religious extremists in Iran to obtain weapons of mass destruction, the entire world would effectively be held hostage. The only alternative would be a catastrophic World War III, potentially triggered by their actions:
And then at some point in the near future, when the time is right, they will build a nuclear weapon. And they will do so, because at that point, they will know that they have become immune, that we will no longer be able to strike their nuclear program because the price of doing so will be too high. This is not just the work of imagination, it exists in the world today.
It’s called North Korea.
Many observers were already aware that Rubio is a smart individual, but his recent speech highlights this point even more clearly. He was right then, and he is right now: coddling terroristic sadists is not a legacy we should be “leaving our children to inherit,” as he put it.
As the conflict continues and many European leaders choose to ignore it, there is no doubt that the Iranian regime poses a civilizational threat to the modern world.
Certainly, Operation Epic Fury could lead to negative consequences—this is the risk associated with confronting evil—but I have long believed that Iran must be addressed. Rubio perfectly articulated the reasons why. If we don’t act now, we will face the problem later, and it will be exponentially harder to eliminate the threat if we allow them to continue unchecked.
As Nostradamus Marco aptly pointed out, doing nothing could lead to a situation similar to North Korea, if not worse. While North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un may be irrational, he seems to have a vested interest in the survival of his regime. In contrast, the Ayatollah, driven by religious fanaticism, has shown a willingness to cause widespread destruction to fulfill his twisted vision of what a god desires for humanity.
Rubio was spot-on about this eleven years ago.
