We often focus on the various threats of Islamic terrorism globally, and rightly so, as there are far too many extremist individuals out there. However, we are occasionally reminded that we also have our own homegrown troublemakers. One such individual is Dawson Noah Maloney, who faced the consequences of his actions after an unsuccessful attempt to attack a power substation in the Las Vegas area.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) has released some legitimately scary details, per this thread on X:

LVMPD Sheriff Kevin McMahill was joined this afternoon by Chief Timothy Shea of the Boulder City Police Department and Special Agent in Charge Chris Delzotto of the FBI Las Vegas Field Office to provide an update regarding a critical incident that began last night near Boulder City.

On Feb. 19, 2026, at approximately 10:00 a.m., Boulder City Police received a 911 call reporting a vehicle had crashed through a secured gate at a Department of Water and Power substation. The caller also reported hearing gunshots after the crash. Responding officers located a silver Nissan Sentra that had breached the facility’s perimeter fence and come to rest inside the secured area.

Officers discovered a deceased adult male in the driver’s seat suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Multiple firearms were observed inside the vehicle.

There is no ongoing threat to the public at this time.

A water and power substation stands out as a critical target of high importance. In this arid desert region, both water and electricity are indispensable; without a reliable water supply, Las Vegas could quickly find itself in dire straits.

The substation is in very close proximity to Vegas:

Interestingly, the attempted attack was reportedly carried out by an individual who had traveled all the way from New York. This raises some intriguing questions: Why would someone make such a long journey? What drew him to Las Vegas?

LVMPD’s Counterterrorism Section responded to assist with the investigation. Working with the Albany Police Department, investigators learned the suspect had recently been reported missing out of New York and had communicated statements to family members referencing self-harm and an intent to carry out an act that would place him “on the news.” License plate reader data confirmed the suspect had traveled from New York to Nevada in a rental vehicle.

Out of an abundance of caution, the incident was treated as terrorism-related due to the location and materials discovered.

What’s more, the suspect had obviously been preparing for this attack for some time, even though he self-terminated before any real damage was done:

Search warrants were executed on both the suspect’s vehicle and his hotel room at the El Rancho Boulder Hotel. Investigators recovered explosive materials and components including thermite, ammonium nitrate, magnesium ribbon, metal pipes, and gasoline.

Here’s the situation: The preparations made by the suspect, combined with the cross-country journey, suggest a considerable amount of thought went into this act. Power and water substations are typically seen as relatively easy targets. The materials that investigators found in the vehicle and the hotel could have caused significant damage to the substation, potentially leading to repairs that could take months. The fencing that the suspect’s vehicle easily breached is enough to keep casual onlookers and troublemakers out, yet, as we’ve seen, an ordinary passenger car can breach that perimeter with little effort.

This strongly indicates that the event was a serious, well-planned operation aimed at a carefully selected target. One might assume that Maloney didn’t act alone, although as of now, there’s no reliable information to confirm that either way.

We’ll keep you update on any big news related to this near-disaster.
