One might reasonably ask why LaMonica McIver hasn’t been expelled from Congress, given that she’s been charged with assaulting ICE agents while attempting to storm a federal facility. The fact that the incident was caught on video only makes the double standard more glaring. But Washington has its own rules, and for now, McIver remains free to posture from a seat of power like nothing happened.
On Tuesday, she finally got her moment.
During a congressional hearing with Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons, McIver launched into a rambling, unhinged tirade, abandoning any pretense of oversight in favor of theatrical moralizing. She demanded to know whether Lyons was “going to hell,” accusing him of having “so much blood” on his hands — a line more suited to a street protest than a serious legislative inquiry:
Rep. LaMonica McIver asks Acting ICE Director Lyons:
"How do you think Judgement Day will work for you with so much blood on your hands?"
Lyons: "I'm not going to entertain that question."
"Of course not. Do you think you're going to hell?"

MCIVER: Mr. Lyons, do you consider yourself a religious man
LYONS: Yes mam.
MCIVER: Oh, yes. Okay. Well, how do you think judgment day will work for you with so much bloo don your hands?
LYONS: I’m not going to entertain that question.
MCIVER: Oh, okay. Of course, not. Do you think you’re going to hell, Mr. Lyons?
LYONS: I’m not going to entertain that.
MCIVER: Of course, not. How many government…
GARBARINO: The gentle lady will suspend, the gentle lady will suspend…
MCIVER: Chairman…
GARBARINO: The gentle lady, as I said, the issues we are debating here are important to ones that members feel deeply about. While vigorous disagreement is part of the legislative process, members are reminded that we must adhere to established standards of decorum and debate. The witnesses are here voluntarily, and I will continue to remind members that while oversight is important, aggressively attacking those witnesses personally is inappropriate and not in keeping with the traditions of our committee.
MCIVER: Mr. Chairman, I’m just asking a question. You guys are always talking about religion here and the Bible. I mean, it’s okay for me to ask a question, right?
Why can’t our politicians just act like normal adults? Extremists exist everywhere, but Congress seems to attract them in bulk. At times, it feels like emotional instability and the impulse control of a toddler are unofficial prerequisites for membership in the House.
That brings us back to LaMonica McIver, who apparently fancies herself an authority on morality and the afterlife. She isn’t. She has no standing — moral or otherwise — to sermonize anyone, let alone a law enforcement official, in such a smug and contemptuous way. Asking whether someone is “going to hell” while baselessly accusing them of murder isn’t righteous indignation; it’s absurdity. It wouldn’t pass muster in a college debate club, much less in the United States Congress.
Despite McIver’s theatrics, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has not been “murdering” people, no matter how often activists repeat the claim. What has happened, repeatedly, is that ICE officers enforcing the law have been harassed, obstructed, and targeted — often amid chaos deliberately stoked by politicians like McIver and her allies. They inflame tensions, demonize agents, and then feign shock when things spiral.
And then there’s the failure of Republican leadership in the room. Andrew Garbarino, who chaired the hearing, should never have allowed McIver to bulldoze him the way she did. When he issued a warning about decorum, she brushed it off with sarcasm — and was allowed to keep going. That’s unacceptable.
McIver is under criminal indictment for conduct captured on video. She should not be grandstanding at hearings as if nothing happened. At minimum, she should have been shut down. Instead, Republicans reportedly cut a deal to shield her from even censure, let alone the expulsion her behavior plainly warrants.
