Veteran California Democrat Maxine Waters had another meltdown on Capitol Hill Wednesday, snapping during a heated House Financial Services Committee hearing as lawmakers pressed Scott Bessent on the economy.
What was supposed to be a serious examination of economic policy quickly devolved into theater. Republicans questioned Bessent on tariffs, inflation, and the growing strain immigration is placing on housing affordability — real issues affecting real Americans. Waters, instead of engaging substantively, resorted to the familiar routine: agitation, interruption, and performative outrage.
Waters, the ranking member of the committee, was questioning Bessent about whether President Trump’s tariffs were contributing to inflation and negatively affecting consumers. She suggested that these tariffs could be seen as a “war on American consumers.” Waters pressed Bessent on whether he would be the “voice of reason” within the administration and encourage Trump to reduce or eliminate the tariffs to help lower costs for Americans.

“Will you be the voice of reason in the administration and urge Trump to stop waging a war on American consumers?” Waters asked. “Yes or no?”
“You seem confused as to the definition of inflation,” Bessent began before Waters interupted and repeated her question.
The exchange quickly descended into a situation where both officials were talking over each other. Bessent argued that the Biden administration had “allowed between 10 and 20 million immigrants” to enter the country, claiming they occupied housing that would have otherwise been available to working Americans.
? JUST IN: Sec. Scott Bessent is EMBARRASSING low-IQ Rep. Maxine Waters right now, this is priceless ?
WATERS: Did you say Trump's tariffs are INFLATIONARY?!
BESSENT: "Uhh…no. ?"
WATERS: OK, we have a New York Times article-

And then Waters lost it.
“Can you shut up?” she asked.
“Can you maintain some level of dignity?” Sec. Bessent shot back.
“The gentlelady’s time has expired,” the chairman, Representative French Hill, a Republican from Arkansas, said.
“MAINTAIN SOME LEVEL OF DIGNITY!”

And of course, Waters had to argue with him, too.
“No, my time has not expired,” Waters said. “The gentleman took up my time. I think you should recognize that, Mr. Chair.”
“The gentlewoman’s time has expired,” the chairman repeated. “The gentlewoman’s time has expired.”
“If you want to protect him, go ahead, but I would not expect you to do that,” Waters claimed as the chairman began to talk over her to proceed with the hearing.
The episode was less about disagreement and more about control. When Democrats don’t like where the facts lead, they try to shut the conversation down. Waters should retire. She’s been in Congress way too long.
