Seattle’s Socialist Mayor Orders Cops to ‘Track ICE’ – Cop Union’s Response Is A Thing of Beauty

In a moment of refreshing common sense from the front lines of law enforcement, the head of the Seattle Police Officers Guild just gave an unmistakable response to Seattle’s new socialist mayor, Katie Wilson, who wants officers to start tracking U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity.

Rather than go along with a politically motivated exercise in virtue signaling, the guild’s leadership made clear that law-abiding police officers have real duties — like keeping their city safe — and should not be co-opted into some woke enforcement dreamed up for press releases:

Seattle’s progressive Mayor Katie Wilson announced a series of moves Thursday that ban federal agents from using city property to conduct immigration enforcement operations and requiring the police department to investigate, verify, and document reports of enforcement activities, citing the “unpredictable, chaotic, and violent behavior” of the federal government.

Let’s break this down: when crime is spiraling, when residents are worried walking downtown at night, when illegal activity and open drug markets strain resources, the last thing a police department needs is a bureaucratic distraction chasing after federal agents because the mayor wants a political talking point.

The president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild, Mike Solan, didn’t offer a timid pushback. It was a firm refusal to turn officers into political props — and a reminder that public safety isn’t about scoring points against federal law enforcement. It’s about protecting citizens, enforcing the law, and not dipping into culture-war theatrics when community safety is already on unstable ground:

Toothless virtue signaling rhetoric like this has already cost two people their lives. The concept of pitting two armed law enforcement agencies against each other is ludicrous, and will not happen. I will not allow SPOG members to be used as political pawns.

This is exactly the sort of independent thinking most Americans respect: law enforcement pushing back on political agendas that don’t match the public’s needs. The mayor can tweet about tracking ICE all she wants — but when you ask the men and women who actually protect the streets to do it, she got a cold dose of reality.

We encountered a similar situation in Los Angeles when LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell announced that he would not require his officers to enforce the “no mask ban” on federal agents, a law signed by Governor Gavin Newsom:

LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell told Fox Los Angeles’ “Good Day LA” that his department will not enforce the directive from California Gov. Newsom.

From a tactical perspective, having officers cite federal authorities for what amounts to a misdemeanor could be unsafe, he said.

“The reality of one armed agency approaching another armed agency to create conflict over something that would be a misdemeanor at best, or an infraction. It doesn’t make any sense,” McConnell said during a presser. “It’s not a good public policy decision, and it wasn’t well thought out in my opinion.”

More police leadership nationwide should be saying the same thing instead of quietly going along with elected officials’ ideological stunts by left-wing mayors and other leaders who think they have some divine authority to block federal immigration enforcement.
