Gregory Bovino, the former commander-at-large of the US Border Patrol, has made his first public statement since being removed from national operations following the tragic shooting deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti earlier this month.

“Team, behind me are a few individuals there, that’s the original turn and burn. The folks that help make America,” Bovino, speaking in front of Mount Rushmore near Rapid City, South Dakota, said. The CBP commander had previously coined the term “turn and burn” to describe mass deportations:

But you know, I am very proud of what you, the mean green machine, are doing in Minneapolis right now. Just like you’ve done across the United States over these past tough nine months. And I want you to know, that you’re the modern day equivalent turn and burn. It makes me very proud.

“I also want you to know that I’ve got your back, now and always. I love you, I support you, and I salute you,” he added.

Bovino was taken off the front lines earlier this week after many criticized him for providing misleading information to the public about the tragic shooting of ICU nurse Alex Pretti by immigration agents.

The former ICE commander initially asserted that Pretti was wielding a concealed firearm when confronted by federal immigration officers, a claim that has been contradicted by available footage, as reported by the New York Post. He also labeled Pretti a “domestic terrorist” who allegedly intended to “massacre” immigration enforcement agents, a term notably absent from President Trump’s comments this week.

In light of these events, President Trump sent Border Czar Tom Homan to Minneapolis to take charge of on-the-ground operations and handle press briefings. This decision effectively sidelined Bovino, who has since resumed his previous role in El Centro, California, as well as Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

Regarding Noem, Trump seemed adamant earlier this week when a reporter asked if she was going to step down. Trump gave a one word response: “No.”
