There’s a noticeable vibe shift happening in Minnesota, and it didn’t come out of nowhere. After it became clear that President Donald Trump — along with rank-and-file agents at ICE and CBP — was deeply dissatisfied with DHS leadership’s fumbling response to the Alex Pretti shooting, the White House moved decisively. Border Czar Tom Homan, who had been pushed to the sidelines, was sent in to take control of the operation.

That shake-up wasn’t limited to personnel. Trump also got on phone calls directly with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.

Some on the right tried to spin Trump’s move as a sign of “surrender,” but let’s be clear: Tom Homan isn’t a capitulator. He’s a seasoned enforcer who prioritizes tactical effectiveness over keyboard warrior shouting matches. Homan doesn’t posture — he gets the job done, and that’s exactly what this crisis in Minnesota needed.

Trump’s decision to shift leadership appears to be paying off already. Federal operations now have clearer direction, and there’s a noticeable change in how things are unfolding on the ground. Case in point: the Minnesota State Patrol — long constrained by Walz’s political hesitations — has finally been unleashed against left-wing rioters, stepping in where local law enforcement previously held back:

Minnesota State Patrol has now been activated. They could have done this the whole time, but it wasn’t until after the call between Walz and Trump, and the discovery of the Signal groups involving Minnesota government officials, that this happened.pic.twitter.com/nTTAtRgZ3r

In those videos, the folks in the neon green vests are Minnesota State Patrol troopers, while everyone else in darker gear are local police. They’re positioned outside a hotel that rioters targeted because they believed federal agents were staying there — and not by accident. I’m told these agitators were driving around hotel parking lots, checking license plate numbers to identify what they thought were CBP and ICE vehicles.

That’s how organized these mobs have become: scanning plates, hunting down locations, stalking law enforcement on public property.

Reports indicate law enforcement didn’t stumble into that riot by accident — they were tipped off ahead of time, which is why they showed up ready to declare an unlawful assembly and were already outfitted in crowd-control gear. In other words, this wasn’t a last-minute call for help over the radio that suddenly brought the Minnesota State Patrol (MSP) into the fray. MSP’s involvement wasn’t something Walz blocked — and at a minimum, he didn’t stop it — which is notable given how long state leadership has resisted backing federal enforcement.

We don’t yet know if this marks the beginning of a broader trend, but it is a necessary start. Any consistent policing of these left-wing rioters and agitators not only restores basic order but directly helps Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and ICE carry out their mission to enforce immigration law without interference.

It seems as if the goal may now be to ease off a bit in order to get more state and local law enforcement help with the result being more deportations. I’m perfectly fine with that.

Trump’s shift in leadership and strategy wasn’t a surrender — it was an adaptation to a rapidly escalating, volatile situation. In the real world, competent leaders don’t confuse stubbornness with strength. Effective generals outmaneuver their opponents; they don’t charge headfirst into chaos and declare victory simply because they refused to adjust.

Federal immigration agents aren’t abstract symbols in an online debate. They’re real people doing a dangerous job under hostile conditions. If a change in approach reduces risk, tightens coordination, and preserves the mission, then the smart move is to let it work — not melt down on social media because it doesn’t fit someone’s preferred aesthetic of toughness.

Is success guaranteed? Of course not. Nothing ever is. But this deserves time to play out. Let Trump and Homan do their jobs. If six months from now deportations are down and enforcement has stalled, then critics can sound the alarm.
