I’m not a constitutional lawyer—but I don’t need to be to understand the basics of the U.S. Constitution: what it permits, what it forbids, and why it exists in the first place.
Which is why the latest round of threats and intimidation from Democrat politicians and their allies in state and local law enforcement aimed at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents should alarm anyone who still believes in the rule of law.
A working knowledge of America’s founding document quickly exposes how reckless, dishonest, and constitutionally illiterate these attacks truly are—at least for those willing to look at the facts objectively, rather than through a partisan lens.
For example, meet Philadelphia Sheriff Rochelle Bilal.
Bilal has eagerly joined the left-wing chorus—cheered on by Democrat officials in positions of power—openly threatening to arrest ICE agents for the supposed crime of doing their lawful, federally mandated jobs: apprehending illegal aliens, including, as President Donald Trump has repeatedly noted, “the worst of the worst.”
On Saturday, Bilal took the podium at a news conference and let loose with an especially reckless and absurd rant. In the process, she didn’t just talk tough—she publicly exposed her own condescension, ignorance, and breathtaking disregard for the Constitution she swore to uphold:
Those that come into our communities wearing masks to commit crime— and thank God for our District Attorney Larry Krasner, who says he’s gonna lock them up… you’re getting arrested… we stand here today with all those who stand against the made-up fake, what you can call ICE. Professional law enforcement? I’m not calling none of that. I call them made-up, fake wanna-be law enforcement.
Because what they do is against not only legal law but moral law… you will not be able to hide. Nobody will whisk you off. You don’t want this smoke, because we’ll bring it to you. And the fake, whatever they call them because I can put… I can’t say their name. But the criminal in the White House will not keep you from going to jail.
It’s hard to even know where to begin after hearing such pathological nonsense:

…we stand here today with all those who stand against the made-up fake, what you can call ICE. Professional law enforcement?
The wannabe tough-gal sheriff clearly has no grasp of the Constitution.
Or, if she does, she’s gone to remarkable lengths to conceal it. And before we dismantle her idiotic remarks, someone should probably explain how the so-called “moral law” is supposedly relevant here. (No need—the question answers itself.)
Whether state or local officials can arrest ICE agents for simply carrying out their lawful duties isn’t a matter of opinion or political theater. It goes straight to the core of American constitutionalism, federalism, and the rule of law—specifically, immigration statutes duly enacted by Congress.
Translation: Bilal and others like her are standing on legally indefensible ground, issuing empty threats they lack the authority to carry out.
Without belaboring the point—or giving a full lecture on the Supremacy Clause—here’s the bottom line:
The Constitution makes clear that federal law is the supreme law of the land, binding on every state and local official regardless of personal ideology or local political fashion. States do not get to veto federal authority by press conference.
Immigration enforcement, in particular, is a core federal responsibility—rooted in Congress’s constitutional power over naturalization and the inherent sovereignty of the United States to control its borders.
No amount of bluster, posturing, or moral preening can change that fact.
Needless to say, thanks to former President Joe Biden and the unelected handlers running his administration, millions upon millions of illegal aliens were allowed to stream across America’s borders with virtually no resistance.
The result has been predictable and catastrophic: chaos at the border, a weakened national security posture, an increase in violent and drug-related crime, and open contempt for the clearly expressed will of the American people—except, of course, for the Democrat Party and its cadre of useful idiots who cheerfully enabled the disaster.
ICE Director Todd Lyons was, let’s say, rather unimpressed by Bilal’s empty threats:
Anytime you pit law enforcement officers against law enforcement officers, it makes nobody safe. This is the exact type of political rhetoric that I’ve been saying, ever since I’ve had the opportunity to be the ICE director, that use of this increased rhetoric is what’s causing the issues, right now.
You can’t pit a local law enforcement officer against a federal law enforcement officer. We are out there trying to do a lawful law enforcement mission, and this rhetoric right here is a pure example of what we’re facing every day.
I’m not one for banter or bluster, but my message to the sheriff is try it, try to arrest my folks. Let’s see what happens.
The saying “play stupid games, win stupid prizes” may be a bit clichéd, but it perfectly captures the reckless and unlawful actions taken by activists who are determined to disrupt ICE’s operations.

So here’s the thing: I’m not among those rushing to issue sweeping declarations about the deadly shooting in Minneapolis. Facts matter, and investigations take time.
That said, one reality is unavoidable—the woman who was killed made a conscious decision to inject herself into a volatile and dangerous situation. She chose to play a very stupid game, and she paid a tragic, entirely preventable price.
Harsh as that may sound, adults are responsible for their choices, especially when they involve interfering with armed federal officers carrying out lawful duties.
Meanwhile, the Left’s political inferno continues to burn out of control, with Democrat lawmakers and other left-wing public officials pouring gasoline on the flames—recklessly escalating tensions rather than restoring order or respecting the rule of law.
As for Bilal, she should be relieved of her duties pronto. She obviously has no business leading any law enforcement agency.
