It’s obvious Minnesota’s political leadership has zero interest in transparency or in cleaning up the mountain of fraud rotting their government programs — especially the state’s Medicaid system. The situation has gotten so out of hand that officials were finally forced to freeze payments to 14 programs on October 31 while investigators sort through the mess.
One of those providers was Ultimate Home Health Services LLC, run by Othman Mohamed — a company that billed Minnesota $462 a day for care it never delivered, neglect that ultimately led to the death of a vulnerable man.
And just when you think the scandal can’t get worse, it does. On November 21, Minnesotans learned that the massive fraud in Medicaid, housing, and food programs has effectively made their tax dollars the largest funding stream for the Somali terror group Al-Shabaab. To top it off, right before Thanksgiving, a judge tossed out a jury’s guilty verdict against Abdifatha Yusuf and his wife — despite jurors quickly finding them guilty of stealing $7.2 million from taxpayers.
Now Minnesota officials are stonewalling, refusing to disclose which Medicaid providers are under investigation for fraud. At this point, the question practically asks itself:
Are state leaders trying to protect members of the Somali community rather than protect the taxpayers footing the bill?

Just two months after a jury delivered guilty verdicts in the Feeding Our Future fraud, Minnesota lawmakers voted to give state agencies broad authority to stop payments to individuals and companies suspected of defrauding the government. They also allowed the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) to disclose when it’s withholding payments from a company over credible allegations of fraud.
But while DHS requested the ability to disclose that information, often, it won’t. The Star Tribune requested records of housing stabilization providers after the FBI searched several offices last summer. DHS subsequently suspended the entire Medicaid-funded program but declined to provide the records of the suspended providers.
The records request is one of more than 10 filed by the news organization related to the department’s handling of fraud. In most instances, the department declined to release the information or hasn’t provided any data yet.
It’s almost certainly no coincidence. Minnesota’s sudden blackout on fraud disclosures looks like a direct reaction to President Trump’s decision to terminate Temporary Protected Status for Somalis in the state — a move he justified by pointing to the massive, systemic fraud running through Minnesota’s welfare programs.
Ending TPS makes it far easier to deport Somalis involved in criminal activity or fraud.
“Minnesota, under Governor Walz, is a hub of fraudulent money laundering activity,” the President wrote on Truth Social. “I am, as President of the United States, hereby terminating, effective immediately, the Temporary Protected Status (TPS Program) for Somalis in Minnesota. Somali gangs are terrorizing the people of that great state, and BILLIONS of Dollars are missing. Send them back to where they came from. It’s OVER! President DJT.”
Minnesota holds the largest Somali population in the country, and Democrats predictably rushed to oppose President Trump’s decision to end TPS. Instead of acknowledging the rampant fraud that prompted the move, they focused on politics. Minneapolis even went so far as to offer taxpayer-funded legal assistance to Somalis affected by the policy change — another example of Democrat leaders prioritizing non-citizens over the people actually footing the bill.

Ilhan Omar stated that President Trump does not have the authority to take this action during a press conference last week. “If you are confused, if you feel threatened, know that the law is on your side, and our demented president can’t do anything about it,” she said. “For the 300 or so people that are impacted that currently live in Minnesota and across the country, we see you, and we stand with you, and we will make sure we do everything that we can to help make sure that your status is adjusted before March of 2026.”
The Democratic Party’s position essentially boils down to this: “Temporary” protected status should last forever, Somalis can siphon off billions in taxpayer dollars — even when that money ends up funding terror groups overseas — and the federal government somehow has no right to remove anyone abusing the system. That’s an astounding platform, even by today’s Democratic standards. But it’s not one that’s a winner.
