Trump Responds To Taylor Greene’s Resignation And It’s Not Quite What We Expected

Unless you’ve been stranded on a desert island for the last 12 hours, you’ve already seen the news: Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA-14) dropped a political bombshell Friday night, announcing she’s retiring from Congress in January. RedState posted her full resignation letter, but one section in particular jumped out — the part addressing President Donald Trump.

And, as you’d expect, Trump has now weighed in with his own take. We’ll get to that in a moment.

So what started all of this? According to insiders, Trump privately sent Greene polling showing she couldn’t win a Senate race in her state of Georgia — a not-so-subtle hint that she should bow out. That didn’t exactly soften things between them. In fact, it seems to have poured gasoline on her already rocky relationship with other GOP leaders, including Speaker Mike Johnson (LA-4).

In her resignation letter, Greene took direct aim at “Establishment Republicans” and even accused Trump of helping engineer a primary challenge against her. It’s clear the internal tensions had reached a breaking point.

“I have too much self-respect and dignity, love my family way too much, and do not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the President we all fought for, only to fight and win my election while Republicans will likely lose the midterms,” she wrote. “And in turn, be expected to defend the President against impeachment after he hatefully dumped tens of millions of dollars against me and tried to destroy me. It’s all so absurd and completely unserious. I refuse to be a ‘battered wife’ hoping it all goes away and gets better.”

On Saturday morning, the president responded to MTG’s news, as I noted, in a post on his Truth Social account, which was to be expected:

( @realDonaldTrump – Truth Social Post )
( Donald J. Trump – Nov 22, 2025, 6:45 AM ET )

“Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Brown, because of PLUMMETING Poll Numbers, and not wanting to face a Primary Challenger with a strong Trump Endorsement (where she would have no chance of winning!),” he noted, “has decided to call it ‘quits.'”

“Her relationship with the WORST Republican Congressman in decades, Tom Massie of Kentucky, also known as Rand Paul Jr. because he votes against the Republican Party (and really good legislation!),” he adds, “did not help her. For some reason, primarily that I refused to return her never ending barrage of phone calls, Marjorie went BAD.”

But then, Trump shifted his tone…dramatically: “Nevertheless, I will always appreciate Marjorie, and thank her for her service to our Country! President DJT.”

On his way to the golf course at Andrews AFB within the last hour, Trump stopped to chat with the White House press gaggle — and naturally, Marjorie Taylor Greene’s name came up.

He repeated some of the same themes from his Truth Social post, but if you watch his full response, the real shift comes at the end. There’s a noticeable change in tone — the same kind of pointed, almost resigned punctuation he used in that Truth Social message:

In another back-and-forth with reporters, Trump was pressed on whether he planned to repair his relationship with someone — possibly Greene, though the audio is garbled — the way he recently patched things up with former DOGE advisor and Tesla CEO Elon Musk:

.@POTUS: "I get along with everybody." pic.twitter.com/5moEJPN97v

Then, Saturday morning, Trump told NBC News:

In a brief phone interview with NBC News, the president said, “It’s not going to be easy for her” to revive her career in politics, though he added, “I’d love to see that.”

In the meantime, Trump said, “she’s got to take a little rest.”

Asked if he believed he could overcome his differences with Greene, Trump said in the interview, “I can patch up differences with anyone.”

Time will tell whether that much-quoted Robert Frost line — the dry, sardonic “Good fences make good neighbors” — ends up describing the new reality inside the GOP. It may be exactly the kind of arm’s-length distance Trump and certain others, Greene included, will need to maintain if the party wants to keep the peace heading into 2026. We’ll keep you posted.
