I’m having a hard time choosing my favorite Democrat.
And to be clear, I don’t mean the one I “admire” the most — that list is empty. I mean the Democrat who best embodies the Platonic Ideal of what the party has become today. The one who perfectly captures its decline, its chaos, and its all-too-predictable degeneracy.
There was a time when I could draw a Venn diagram of Republicans and Democrats and find a respectable overlap — a decent number of Democrats I’d gladly spend time with or even trust more than a few Republicans. We might have disagreed on policy, but at least they had some grounding in basic morality and common sense. In some cases, I’d have been more comfortable with them in leadership than with certain folks supposedly on “my side.”
That’s gotten a lot harder now — and not because Republicans have suddenly become saints. We’ve still got our share of duds. The difference is that the Democratic Party has sprinted so far into the moral abyss that I can barely name one or two who aren’t camped out on the wrong side of the cosmic battle between good and evil.
Gavin Newsom isn’t quite the Platonic Ideal of a Democrat, of course. No earthly creature could fully embody that level of perfection — or depravity — depending on how you look at it. But he comes impressively close.
He may not have the wild-eyed ideological fervor of the truly unhinged socialists and Marxists now climbing the ranks of his party — Newsom is more of a performative progressive than an actual believer — but he’s absolutely willing to stage whatever political sacrifice is required if it inches him closer to power. In that sense, he fits the mold almost flawlessly.
Newsom jetted down to the Brazilian Amazon this week to deliver yet another polished performance of his manufactured climate “concern.” In classic Democratic fashion, he blamed the Pacific Palisades fire — and his own embarrassing failure to manage the recovery — on climate change instead of the glaring mismanagement that everyone can see. And of course, he did it all while doing that bizarre little “Hustle” routine he trots out whenever he’s trying to distract from the truth.

The old joke about politicians lying whenever their lips are moving still applies, but with Gavin Newsom you get bonus tells — like the frantic, jittery body language of a guy who looks like he just got a little too friendly with a rolled-up dollar bill and some snorts of the white powder.
Gee, I can’t imagine why California’s homeless crisis keeps getting worse — even with Gavin dumping billions into programs that mostly help people self-medicate their way deeper into dysfunction. Truly a mystery for the ages.
What makes Newsom so close to the Platonic Ideal of a Democratic leader is the combination of slick performance skills and a sociopathic indifference to the fallout of his decisions. He’ll say absolutely anything if it gets him what he wants, and he can pivot on a dime the second the applause meter shifts.
Democrats can’t get enough of it. He looks good, he sounds good, and he can do the Hustle.
And the wreckage he leaves behind? Well, according to Newsom, Republicans clearly did all that.
