After a record-shattering 43-day government shutdown, the federal government finally reopened Wednesday night as President Trump signed a continuing resolution to fund operations through January 30. With the stroke of his pen, furloughed federal workers can get back on the job and receive their long-overdue back pay, the 42 million Americans who depend on food assistance will get their benefits, and U.S. service members will once again receive the paychecks they never should have to go without.
As Trump signed the funding bill on Wednesday, he made it clear who dragged the country through this mess: “The country has never been in better shape. We went through this short-term disaster with the Democrats because they thought it would be good politically. It’s an honor now to sign this incredible bill and get our country working again.”
And he’s right — Democrats gambled with the livelihoods of millions of Americans for cheap political theater.
So what was the real cost of Chuck Schumer’s shutdown stunt?
Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council, told reporters the shutdown burned through roughly $15 billion per week, adding up to an astonishing $92 billion in losses. It also dragged down economic growth by 1 to 1.5 percent and wiped out an estimated 60,000 private-sector jobs.
All for a political play that blew up in the Democrats’ faces:

Hassett also went on to address concerns about the economy, telling reporters:
The first thing that we’ve done stopped the runaway inflation. The second thing we’ve done is we’ve pushed policies that have caused incomes to grow a lot. But we understand that people understand, as people look at their pocketbooks to go to the grocery store, that there’s still work to do.
Democrats spent the shutdown weaponizing SNAP recipients and anyone else they could hold hostage, all to score political points and protect their own failing agenda. Meanwhile, President Trump has been focused on cleaning up four years of disastrous policy and getting the economy back under control. It’s the same contrast we’ve seen over and over again: Democrats play politics, Trump delivers results.
