Hakeem Jeffries Just Showed How Dysfunctional His Democratic Party Really Is

It’s official — the Senate deal is headed to the House, and unless something major blows up, it’s going to pass. That means the longest government shutdown in American history is finally coming to an end — a shutdown Democrats created because they demanded $1.5 trillion for NPR handouts and health care for illegal immigrants.

Republicans held the line. Trump didn’t cave. And to their credit, congressional Republicans also resisted calls to scrap the legislative filibuster — a move that would’ve been political suicide down the road. The reality is, majorities shift. Power changes hands. But principle matters — and this time, the GOP stood firm while Democrats overplayed their hand.

The deal is basically a carbon copy of what Republicans put on the table from day one. It keeps SNAP benefits funded through September 2026, extends overall government funding until January 30, and guarantees a vote on Obamacare subsidies. This is the same offer that’s been floating around since mid-October.

The original continuing resolution was only meant to buy time — seven weeks to hammer out a dozen appropriations bills at the same Biden-era spending levels Democrats themselves backed in March. But their messaging, their strategy, and their goals were a total flop. Yes, Democrats managed to win a few elections in 2025, but when push came to shove, they were the ones who blinked. They knew the jig was up — and it was.

On the other side, Trump’s team needs to take note of the slippage among Hispanic voters in a few regions — a warning sign that the MAGA agenda needs to double down on economic and cultural issues that resonate. Congress should lean in harder, not back off. And while we’re at it — the Fed needs to wake up and cut the damn interest rates.

Meanwhile, Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) claimed that Sen. Chuck Schumer personally gave Democrats the green light to jump on this deal — a move that eight Democratic senators ultimately took. But Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), a.k.a. “Dollar Tree Obama,” is trying to deny it:

This is an interesting situation: a major rift is brewing between Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) and Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) over Schumer's failure to unite his caucus.

Khanna insists Schumer "blessed" the Senators who voted to reopen the government, proof of his ineffectiveness.

This party is one giant mess. No one’s on the same page, and you can see the frustration beginning to boil over. Not even Sen. John Fetterman knows who the party’s leader is.
