Anyone who thought this shutdown was going to wrap up today must’ve been hitting Hunter Biden’s crack pipe. There was never a chance the two sides were going to strike a deal — not when Democrats are digging in their heels and demanding $1.5 trillion for illegal alien healthcare and a taxpayer bailout for NPR.
This isn’t about compromise; it’s a hostage situation. The Left is trying to smuggle in a backdoor repeal of key parts of the Big, Beautiful Bill, and Republicans would be fools to cave. Credit where it’s due: Senate Republicans are standing firm. For once, the GOP isn’t playing the role of doormat.
Friday’s vote on the House bill fell six votes short of the 60 needed to advance. Senators Angus King (I-ME), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), and John Fetterman (D-PA) joined Republicans in opposition, while Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) broke ranks and voted against it (why isn’t Senate Majority Leader John Thune breaking down Paul’s office door and pinning him to the floor until he agrees to be a Republican again??).
Democrats’ alternative measure also failed, 52–46. With both proposals blocked and no additional votes scheduled over the weekend, the government remains shut down. POLITICO reports:
The government shutdown will go into a second week.
Senators rejected another opportunity Friday to reopen agencies and are now out of session until Monday, when leadership is expected to force a fifth vote on a House-passed proposal to fund the government through Nov. 21.
So far, however, congressional leaders and the White House are locked in a cold war, with no sign that, left to their own devices, they would be able to find a way to reopen the government anytime soon.
In the meantime, OMB Director Russell Vought is already taking a hatchet to bloated government spending — exactly what voters sent this administration to do. Every day the shutdown drags on, the swamp bleeds a little more, and the Left grows more desperate.
And if nothing else, we get a few more days of the now-iconic “elite sombrero” memes, which have completely unhinged Democrats online.

These are just…too funny. Meanwhile, Democrats owned the shutdown already, so every day that passes and they continue to hold the country hostage without agreeing to a clean funding bill that would reopen the government is another nail in their collective coffins as a party. Not a bad trade-off for Republicans.
