Attorney General Pam Bondi has made a head-turning move amid fallout from the Jeffrey Epstein case as MAGA world continues to criticize the administration’s claim there is no evidence suggesting a “client list” or other nefarious conspiracies surrounding the late convicted pedophile.
Maurene Comey, daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, was fired Wednesday from her position as a prosecutor with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York (SDNY), according to multiple reports.
Comey played a key role in the criminal cases against Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell—cases that have drawn renewed scrutiny for the Trump administration in recent weeks amid mounting pressure to release more information about Epstein’s network, The Hill reported.
Comey was part of the team that prosecuted Jeffrey Epstein on sex trafficking charges before he died by suicide in jail while awaiting trial. She also worked on several other high-profile cases, including the prosecution of music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs.
No official reason was given for her dismissal, according to The Associated Press, which cited a source familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity. Politico was the first to break the news of her firing, the report said, adding that Politico was first to report the firing.
Comey’s firing follows a wave of recent dismissals involving career Justice Department officials. Just last week, Bondi terminated several prosecutors tied to the January 6 cases, including members of former special counsel Jack Smith’s team. Bondi also dismissed the Justice Department’s top career ethics official on Friday.
Meanwhile, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, revealed Tuesday that a Chicago-based immigration judge was fired shortly after giving him a tour and meeting with him. In the termination letters, Bondi has consistently cited Article II of the Constitution—which outlines executive authority—as the legal basis for the firings.
James Comey, who was fired as FBI director during Trump’s first term, has remained a vocal critic of the former president. He recently faced backlash after posting a photo of seashells arranged to spell out “86-47.” The White House suggested the message could be interpreted as a threat against Trump.
