As Americans prepare to celebrate Independence Day, patriotism is emerging as a point of division, according to a new poll shared exclusively with the New York Post.
The survey, conducted by New Jersey-based GOP firm National Research Inc., found that 91% of self-identified Republicans consider themselves patriots, compared to only 50% of Democrats. The poll revealed a similar divide among 2024 voters, with 90% of those who supported President Trump identifying as patriots, compared to 55% of supporters of former Vice President Kamala Harris, the outlet reported.
The poll revealed a similar divide among 2024 voters, with 90% of President Trump supporters identifying as patriots compared to 55% of former Vice President Kamala Harris backers. Among self-described conservatives, 87% considered themselves patriots, while only 51% of liberals said the same, according to the survey.
National Research founder Adam Geller, a GOP pollster and strategist who worked for Trump’s 2016 campaign, told The Post that though the results are likely in part due from “a little leftover saltiness” from the election, “we need to have a country where even if you don’t love the president, you’re still proud to be an American — you still hold those values.”
Geller’s findings align with other recent polls on national sentiment. A recent Gallup survey found that only 36% of Democrats described themselves as “extremely” or “very” proud to be American—a steep drop from 62% in 2024 and the lowest level among the group this century. Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) lamented these results in a post on X Friday.
“Last week, Gallup polled only 36% of Democrats are ‘extremely or very proud’ to be American. In the greatest country in the world, that’s just wrong. I’m unapologetically grateful for our nation and the American Way of Life—today, and always,” the Pennsylvanian wrote.
The Post added: “Just over half (53%) of independents said they were extremely or very proud to be American, down seven percentage points from last year. Republican pride in the US spiked by seven percentage points to 92%. Overall, a record low 58% of respondents were extremely (41%) or very (17%) proud to be an American, a nine-point dip from last year.”
