DeSantis Reestablishes MAGA Cred With ‘Alligator Alcatraz’

At the direction of Gov. Ron DeSantis, Florida is rapidly building a $450 million-per-year immigration detention center in the heart of the Everglades, aligning with President Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration agenda.

Nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz,” the facility has drawn significant opposition and is facing a legal challenge. However, the project has also elevated the national profiles of both DeSantis and his appointed Attorney General, James Uthmeier, earning them widespread media attention and a noticeable boost in their political standing.

The initiative was led by Uthmeier, DeSantis’ former chief of staff and current appointee as Florida attorney general, with the goal of establishing a South Florida counterpart to Alcatraz—the infamous former prison off San Francisco’s coast known for its isolation and inescapability due to its location in the San Francisco Bay, over a mile from shore.

DeSantis has long made immigration enforcement a central theme of his political platform, and the construction of a high-profile facility surrounded by swamps, snakes, and alligators aligns closely with his administration’s broader policy agenda.

Beyond its policy implications, the project has also helped revive DeSantis’ national MAGA visibility following his unsuccessful 2024 presidential campaign, while boosting Uthmeier’s political standing as he prepares for his first run for elected office in the 2026 midterms.

“This is going to be a force multiplier, and we are really happy to be working with the federal government to satisfy President Trump’s mandate,” DeSantis said Friday morning while touring the facility live on “Fox & Friends.”

Florida’s push to position itself as the leading state advancing Trump-aligned immigration policies is nothing new, but the construction of “Alligator Alcatraz” marks the most high-profile effort to date—and one that has resonated strongly with the Republican base.

DeSantis received a prominent platform during a Fox News interview on Friday, but since June 18, the term “Alligator Alcatraz” has been mentioned approximately 3,400 times across national and local media, according to media monitoring service TVEyes. The surge in coverage signals that, for the first time since his unsuccessful presidential run, DeSantis is regaining traction in the national media spotlight.

While Trump has not yet commented publicly on the project, his Department of Homeland Security granted the necessary federal approval for Florida to operate the facility. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem praised the initiative in a statement this week, signaling the administration’s support.

“Under President Trump’s leadership, we are working at turbo speed on cost-effective and innovative ways to deliver on the American people’s mandate for mass deportations of criminal illegal aliens,” she said, per NBC News. “We will expand facilities and bed spaces in just days, thanks to our partnership with Florida.”
