Facing opposition from members of his own party, the Democrat attempting to push the GOP-led House into taking action on seven articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump reconsidered his position. Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI), who had been facing bipartisan resistance and was likely to see his resolution tabled, announced on X that he would not be forcing a vote on Wednesday after consulting with his colleagues.
“Instead, I will add to my articles of impeachment and continue to rally the support of both Democrats and Republicans to defend the Constitution with me,” Thanedar said. The Michigan Democrat claimed that Trump’s controversial plan to accept a luxury aircraft worth approximately $400 million, known as the “Flying Palace,” from Qatar constitutes a new impeachable offense, the Daily Wire reported.
He noted in a lengthy X post:
In the fifteen days since I filed seven articles of impeachment against President Trump, he has committed more impeachable offenses, most dangerously, accepting a $400 million private jet from Qatar, which even Republican Members of Congress have called wrong.
So, after talking with many colleagues, I have decided not to force a vote on impeachment today. Instead, I will add to my articles of impeachment and continue to rally the support of both Democrats and Republicans to defend the Constitution with me.
This is not about any one person or party; it is about defending America, our Constitution, and Rule of Law. I will continue to pursue all avenues to put this President on notice and hold him accountable for his many impeachable crimes.
Unveiled last month, Thanedar’s impeachment resolution accused Trump of committing various “high crimes and misdemeanors” over alleged constitutional violations concerning taxpayer funds, deportations, tariffs, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), retaliation against the press, and more. Thanedar announced on Tuesday that he would invoke privilege, a move that would compel House GOP leadership to address his impeachment resolution within two legislative days.
However, Axios reported that Democrats privately criticized Thanedar, calling him a “dumbs***” and “utterly selfish” for pushing forward with the impeachment. The outlet also revealed that Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) received applause from colleagues during a meeting after labeling the impeachment effort as “idiotic” and “horrible.”
