One of Congress’s most partisan, left-wing Democratic hacks has just sunk to a new low — which is saying something — in his never-ending unhinged attacks on President Donald Trump and members of his administration. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) claimed on the equally absymally left-wing MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” that Trump administration officials could face arrest for “interfering with a legal proceeding,” which he likened to “kidnapping.”
Raskin and other Democrats have portrayed deported immigrants as victims, highlighting the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia—a Salvadoran national and suspected MS-13 member whom they describe as a hero. They accuse the administration of “kidnapping” and “disappearing” Abrego Garcia and demand his return, even though an immigration judge ordered his removal because of his gang affiliations. “I regard it very much within the prism of what we’ve been dealing with over the last month, which is an intense assault on judicial independence. They have been disobeying federal court orders systematically,” Raskin told Maddow.
The far-left congressman then bizarrely claimed that Judge James Boasberg—an Obama appointee who is pursuing contempt proceedings against Trump officials—was a “conservative Republican.” He added: “They have been demanding the impeachment of judges who rule against the lawlessness of the Trump administration. There are now more than 90 preliminary injunctions and temporary restraining orders against the chaos that’s been unleashed on the country by the Trump administration.”
The gaslighting with Maddow continued: “Now they’re arresting judges, and the first felony criminal charge brought against Judge Hannah Dugan in Wisconsin is interfering with a legal proceeding, which is essentially what they’ve been doing all along. What Judge Boasberg is about to hold them in criminal contempt for and has found that there is probable cause for criminal contempt is that they deliberately ignored and defied his order not to take off in those airplanes headed for El Salvador and not turning the airplanes around.”
What Raskin — and Judge Boasberg — leave out is that sometimes you can’t just ‘order’ a plane to turn around. It may not have been safe to do that. The plane may not have had enough fuel. There could be a dozen more reasons why it wouldn’t be practical to do so. But there is also this fact: The planes he ordered returned were well outside of U.S. airspace and, thus, well outside his jurisdiction. Also, his written order did not instruct the planes to return to the U.S.
Moveover, legal scholars, including veteran trial attorney Alan Dershowitz, have criticized Boasberg’s contempt proceedings, noting that the ruling he seeks to enforce was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. Despite this, Boasberg has maintained that the Trump administration defied his oral order to turn around a flight carrying violent Venezuelan and Salvadoran gang members.
Raskin and Democrats like him are attempting to gaslight our country into full-scale civil conflict with lies about actions the Trump administration is taking — just like they tried to do during Trump’s first term. These people are caustic, they are dangerous to liberty, and they should be expelled.
