President Donald Trump wants to make a major change to the White House he says should have actually been done centuries ago. On Wednesday, the president was seen on the White House North Lawn this morning, scouting a location for a new flagpole that will display the American flag 100 feet in the air. Notably, there are currently no American flags positioned on either side of the White House—an omission Trump says he intends to correct. “They’ve needed flagpoles for 200 years,” he said.
Trump was observed near Pebble Beach, the area where reporters typically gather for daily media coverage. “A beautiful flag pole for the American Flag. We never had a flag pole. One here, one on the other side too,” he told reporters. Another shot shows the President on the lawn, waving to the press and not taking any questions. Trump eventually held a press gaggle and revealed his decision to install “beautiful, almost 100-foot tall American flag[s]” on the north and south lawns.
He told reporters: “We’re putting up a beautiful, almost 100 foot tall American flag on this side and another one on the other side; two flags top of the line, and they’ve needed flag poles for 200 years. It was something I’ve often said, you know, they don’t have the flag pole, per se. So we’re putting one right where you saw us, and we’re putting another one on the other side, on top of the mounds. It’s going to be two beautiful flags.” In addition, in his usual patriotic way, Trump said he would finance the cost of installing the flags himself. “Paid for by Trump,” the president added.

“There are currently no freestanding flagpoles on the White House grounds, but there is an American flag flying from the top of the building,” the New York Post noted. The addition of two new American flags—one on the North Lawn and another on the South Lawn—is just the latest in a series of changes President Trump is making to the White House grounds. He has already announced plans to renovate the Rose Garden by replacing the grass with a raised platform, making it easier to host events and deliver speeches without standing on soggy ground.
Trump has also floated the idea of adding a ballroom to the White House, similar to the one at Mar-a-Lago. He said he pitched the $100 million proposal to the Biden administration but “never heard back.” This time, he joked, he’ll approve it himself to create “more room” for events and eliminate the need for large tents. Inside the White House, Trump has redecorated the Oval Office to reflect his signature style—adding more portraits of former presidents and lining the walls, doors, picture frames, and several statues with gold accents, echoing the opulence of his Mar-a-Lago estate. On the South Lawn, the president also personally took part in planting a new tree to replace the nearly 200-year-old magnolia, which had deteriorated and posed a safety risk.
