A bomb squad was deployed Thursday after a suspicious package was discovered just steps from the White House, triggering a rapid response from both federal and local authorities. The U.S. Secret Service and D.C. police are actively investigating the item, which was found in a dumpster near the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue—roughly 500 meters from the White House.
The area, including the nearby Ellipse, has been locked down to ensure public safety, according to reports. A heavy law enforcement presence quickly surrounded the scene, with roads shut down and officers in bomb suits seen arriving to inspect the package, the reports added.

Streets surrounding the Treasury Department were also sealed off, with photos circulating online showing police vehicles blocking access to the area. No injuries have been reported at this time, and officials have not yet determined whether the package contains an explosive device. Authorities are urging the public to steer clear of the area as the investigation continues. Both the Secret Service and specialized bomb disposal units remain on-site. Updates are expected as more details are confirmed.
The U.S. Treasury building and Hotel Washington were evacuated on Thursday morning following reports of a “suspicious package” near the White House. NewsNation White House correspondent Libbey Dean said on X that the United States Secret Service (USSS) responded to the reports and now says the scene is “safe.”
“USSS responded to reports of a ‘suspicious package’ outside the White House today near 15th and Pennsylvania Ave NW around 9:45 this morning,” Dean posted. “The scene is now safe, but parts of the Treasury Building and the Hotel Washington were evacuated, per USSS.”
