The Democratic Party is dealing with several crises, from messaging to unpopular ideologies to identity and branding. To distract Americans, the party is trying a new tactic, involving staged town halls of its own, as well as sending left-wing activists – sometimes posing as angry and disaffected Trump voters – to disrupt GOP events. It does not appear to be helping, which is perhaps why some of these rabble-rousers are becoming increasingly hysterical.
There can be no denying that Democrat town halls are a lot more astroturf than grassroots. It’s not exactly a secret that they are being organized by progressive activist groups such as Indivisible, a national organization with local chapters that openly asserts its main purpose is to defeat the Trump agenda.
Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) had a recent run-in with the Chattanooga Times Free Press, which contacted her in an almost harassing manner to inquire about an upcoming town hall organized by Democracy in Action. Among the questions, Blackburn was asked if she and two Republican Tennessee representatives planned to attend – and, if not, why. But the senator knew it was a set-up. When a radical left group organizes one of these town halls and invites three elected Republicans, the intent is not to reach across the aisle but to humiliate and berate them. The chance of any of the three GOPers – had they attended – even getting to speak at any length without being screamed at was just about zero.
What the paper didn’t directly disclose to Sen. Blackburn was that one of its own former reporters, Judy Walton, helped organize the event. The senator made clear in an X post what she thought of the antics: “It is absurd that the @TimesFreePress would reach out requesting comment on a sham ‘townhall’ that is being organized by radical left wing activists without disclosing that one of the organizers is a former reporter at the same outlet. Political stunts like these are why trust in the media is at an all-time low.”
Weaponizing Town Halls
Republican town halls across the country have been overrun by disruptive progressive activists posing as voters furious about federal funding and personnel cuts initiated by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). But opinion polling doesn’t indicate that the DOGE cuts are unpopular.
“Voters are furious about the DOGE firings, reckless tariffs driving up prices, picking fights with Canada, and the constant government overreach and intrusion,” wrote Nadine Smith, a former journalist, on Substack. “At town halls, constituents are showing up and speaking out.” Again, the polls do not support this claim. It is also very much open to question how many of these protesters are constituents of the representatives at whom they are yelling – and how many were ushered in from other districts or even other states.
Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-IN) was screamed at by activists during a town hall meeting as she defended the work DOGE was doing. A Newsweek report of the event claimed Spartz was booed and berated by “her constituents,” but, again, it would have been interesting to know how many of these disruptors really did live in the congresswoman’s district.
A few voices on the left are quietly admitting that the Democrats’ platform is a bust, but they have painted themselves into a corner. Can they really abandon the ideas of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and brush aside “transgender ideology” and other radical positions the party has adopted over the past decade without being seen as abandoning the progressive vision?
Caught in this trap of their own making, Democrats have gone all in on fake outrage, theatrics, and even violence and vandalism. Sooner or later, though, if they want to win national elections, they will have to stand for something, rather than just standing against everything President Trump and the Republicans are doing.
