House Republicans are scheduled to receive an update on the Trump administration’s investigation into billionaire George Soros’ influence over local radio stations. The Republican Study Committee, consisting of 175 conservative lawmakers, will meet privately on Wednesday with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr to discuss the matter.
A source familiar with the planning indicated that FCC Chairman Brendan Carr will brief GOP lawmakers on the commission’s investigation into billionaire George Soros, focusing on his connection to an investment firm that purchased over 200 Audacy radio stations nationwide. Carr and the Republican lawmakers are also expected to discuss strategies for countering media outlets they believe are biased against the GOP, as first reported by Fox News.
The Republican Study Committee (RSC), the largest faction within the House GOP, has long served as an informal think tank for the party. This year, it has also become a key platform for top Trump administration officials to engage with Capitol Hill, Fox added. Last month, Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller addressed the RSC on immigration and President Donald Trump’s plan for executive action. Earlier in February, Energy Secretary Chris Wright also spoke to the group.
An investment firm connected to left-wing billionaire George Soros became the largest shareholder in radio giant Audacy at the end of the Biden administration. Late last year, the Soros Investment Fund acquired approximately 40% of Audacy’s debts after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Republican lawmakers, including Rep. Chip Roy of Texas and Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana, strongly criticized the deal, calling for increased scrutiny, as reported by Fox.
Carr signaled he wanted to set his sights on Soros late last year during an interview on “Mornings with Maria.” He said in late November: “There’s a petition for reconsideration pending at the FCC right now. And I want to take a very hard look at that.”
