Far-left Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) sparked controversy when she admitted to cheering for Canada and Mexico over the United States, drawing swift backlash for what critics are labeling anti-American rhetoric. The left-wing lawmaker, a close ally of the radical “Squad,” openly expressed her support for foreign nations while criticizing the U.S. under President Donald Trump.
“The fact that I’m rooting for Canada and I’m rooting for Mexico a lot is really wild,” Crockett said during an appearance on New York City-based The Breakfast Club. “But they are really the ones that are speaking truth to power right now… They can see what it is, and they were like, ‘We are not messing with this crazy regime from Mar-a-Lago and basically calling them thugs.’”
Crockett, who has often criticized conservatives, justified her comments by claiming that America brought this situation upon itself. “That’s what it is, but I’m like, y’all knew who he was when y’all elected him, so don’t act surprised,” she continued. Crockett’s comments add to a long history of controversial statements from members of the “Squad.” Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) have faced intense criticism for their anti-Israel rhetoric, while Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) has called for defunding the police, despite rising crime in her district. And all of them have been critical of their own country.
“People don’t understand,” said Crockett during her Wednesday interview on The View, where she criticized President Trump’s approach to governance, claiming he is attempting to “get rid of the Constitution … with a pen. You will understand when those hospitals in rural America start closing down even more. You will understand when you don’t have your Social Security. You will understand when your Medicaid, your Medicare, goes away,” claimed Crockett. “You will understand as planes continue to fall out of the sky.”
“We know that, typically, when people are feeling it, especially in the economy, they tend to just go the other way. The problem is that this wasn’t the guy to fix anything. This is the guy that is the king of breaking things,” she argued.
In fact, rural hospitals have been closing for decades, mostly due to government-imposed regulations and restrictions on Medicare and Social Security payouts that hampered their ability to remain open, many of them during Democratic congresses and administrations. Also, Crockett seems to be suggesting a well-worn and oft-disproven lie that the Trump administration and/or Republicans in general want to eliminate Medicare and Medicaid and cut Social Security, despite the fact that Trump himself and nearly all Republicans have said repeatedly they’re not interested in doing so.
