The Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard has been relieved of her duties over concerns related to border security, recruitment challenges, and an “erosion of trust,” a senior DHS official confirmed to Fox News.

Admiral Linda Lee Fagan, 61, was terminated by Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Benjamine Huffman, the official stated. According to the official, Fagan’s tenure was marked by leadership shortcomings, operational failures, and an inability to meet the Coast Guard’s strategic objectives.

Key issues cited include a failure to address border security threats effectively, inadequate leadership in recruitment and retention, and mismanagement in acquiring critical assets such as icebreakers and helicopters. The official also highlighted an overemphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, which allegedly diverted resources and focus from operational priorities.

Fagan is accused of not deploying Coast Guard assets effectively to support national border security, including efforts to intercept fentanyl and other illicit substances. She also reportedly demonstrated insufficient coordination with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to prioritize maritime border operations.

Recruitment challenges under Fagan’s leadership further exacerbated operational readiness issues, with a lack of innovative strategies to address retention problems in critical specialties undermining workforce sustainability. Persistent delays and cost overruns in acquiring essential assets, such as icebreakers and helicopters, were also noted, which the official claimed weakened the Coast Guard’s capabilities in the Arctic and other strategic regions. These acquisition failures, flagged during President Trump’s first administration, lacked sufficient accountability.

Additionally, the official pointed to the mishandling of Operation Fouled Anchor—the Coast Guard’s internal investigation into sexual assault cases at the Coast Guard Academy—as a major factor in the “erosion of trust.” Fagan faced criticism for not addressing the systemic issues revealed by the investigation and for withholding documents requested by Congress.
