Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) became embroiled in controversy on Capitol Hill following a chaotic interaction with independent journalist Nick Sortor. The incident unfolded when Sortor questioned the progressive lawmaker about her refusal to criticize the Biden administration’s handling of the ongoing migrant crisis.
In a video shared by Sortor on X (formerly Twitter), he approached Ocasio-Cortez to ask why she has not addressed the border crisis’s effects on her constituents. Ocasio-Cortez initially attempted to evade the questions, but tensions escalated when her aide physically intervened to block Sortor. The congresswoman then accused the journalist of assault, further intensifying the exchange.
“Get your hands off me,” Sortor can be heard saying in the video. However, it was Ocasio-Cortez’s aide who appeared to initiate the confrontation, stepping in front of Sortor and pushing him away. Capitol Police were called to the scene, but after reviewing the incident, they sided with Sortor, confirming that no assault occurred against Ocasio-Cortez.

Sortor wrote in his post: ” I confronted AOC at the Capitol over her refusal to condemn the Biden Migrant Crisis, which led to a migrant setting an innocent woman on fire today AOC blamed DANIEL PENNY for subways being unsafe, and encourages even MORE unvetted migrants to pour across the border. She responded by falsely accusing me of assauIt, and even got the Capitol Police involved, who agreed I never touched her. AOC is one of the WORST members of Congress, and her lack of action is costing the lives of innocent New Yorkers.”
Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has faced growing criticism for her stance on public safety and immigration issues. She has reportedly attributed the dire conditions on New York City subways not to criminal activity but to individuals like Daniel Penny, a Marine veteran involved in a high-profile incident on a subway last year. “AOC,” as she is known, has consistently advocated for increased federal funding to help New York City manage the ongoing migrant crisis.
In September 2023, during a press conference outside the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan, she and other congressional members were met with vocal protests, including anti-immigrant rhetoric from demonstrators. She has also been outspoken in her criticism of Penny, who was acquitted in the death of Jordan Neely during the subway incident. Following the not guilty verdict, she expressed concerns about public safety, arguing that holding individuals like Penny accountable is essential to preventing future acts of violence.
“I just feel like, that, that tells us everything,” she said on X. “If we do not want violence on our subways, and the point of our justice system is a level of accountability to prevent a person who does not have remorse about taking another person’s life- I mean even people who have engaged in manslaughter or who have taken a life accidentally, express remorse.” She added: “So the fact that a person may express no remorse, indicates that there’s a risk it may happen again. And if we don’t want to unleash that violence, then we should exert a level of accountability, to prevent that from happening.”
Earlier this week, an illegal immigrant who had reportedly been deported before allegedly lit a sleeping woman on fire in a New York City subway car, killing her.
