NewsNation host Chris Cuomo criticized Democrats on Tuesday for their efforts to pursue President-elect Donald Trump through impeachment proceedings and legal actions in New York. During his presidency, Trump faced an unprecedented two impeachment trials led by Democrats, and since leaving office, Democrats have initiated two legal cases against him in New York. On his podcast, “The Chris Cuomo Project,” Cuomo spoke with MSNBC’s Charlie Sykes, describing the first impeachment as “a political indulgence” and dismissing the New York legal cases as “crap” designed to undermine Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.
“I believe that what the Democrats did to Donald Trump — which I covered, which was the job [at CNN] — to impeach a guy when you know you have no chance of getting him removed — okay, zero chance — that was a political indulgence to do nothing but distract from the interests of the people,” Cuomo said. “And you were creating an impression of a standard that you never had any intention of holding up yourself.”
Trump was acquitted in both of his impeachment trials in 2020 and 2021. However, in February, he was ordered to pay more than $400 million to New York in a civil fraud lawsuit initiated by the state’s Democratic Attorney General, Letitia James. Additionally, in May, he faced a criminal conviction in a case brought forward by Democratic Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
“And the Democrats have proven the problem with their actions. Those New York cases, Charlie, were crap, and they only brought them to try to slow down Trump. We both know it,” Cuomo continued. “And what they did with [Vice President] Kamala Harris is proof that they don’t give a shit about any higher standard. They didn’t even allow for the Democratic process in their own stupid little club where they can do whatever they want.”

In July, Harris obtained sufficient support from Democratic delegates to become the party’s presumptive nominee despite garnering not a single primary vote. The process was criticized by left-wing voters and Doug Schoen, a former adviser to President Bill Clinton, who expressed their disapproval of how the nomination was achieved. Harris also couldn’t win the Democratic presidential nomination outright when she ran for it in 2020, eventually becoming among the first to drop out after losing her home state of California.
